DM Playhouse Presents HAIRSPRAY July 15-Aug 7

The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents the Tony Award winning musical, "Hairspray," July 15-Aug. 7, 2011. Tickets may be purchased online, by phone at 515-277-6261 and at The Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St. "Hairspray" is sponsored by Ruan Companies and Bankers Trust.

"Hairspray" delights audiences by sweeping them away to 1960s Baltimore, where the '50s are out and change is in the air. Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair?

"Hairspray" is based on the 1988 John Waters film. The Playhouse production is directed by Ron Ziegler, with music direction by Brenton Brown and choreography by Alison Shafer. The cast of 32 features Samantha Aaron as Tracy Turnblad, Douglas Cochrane as Edna Turnblad, Jonathan Brugioni as Link Larkin, Heather Smith as Amber Von Tussel, Carol Palmer as Velma Von Tussel, Ken-Matt Martin as Seaweed J. Stubbs, Anita Holland as Motormouth Maybelle, and Mary Craven as Penny Pingleton.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
