Jim McGreevey, the 52nd Governor of New Jersey, made a special appearance at the Saturday, June 28th, evening performance of Joe Assadourian's The Bullpen. A service volunteer to former prisoners seeking rehabilitation with the Exodus Transitional Community, McGreevey stopped for a photo with Playwright/Actor Joe Assadourian and Fortune Society Founder David Rothenberg.
Kyra Sedgwick to Star in John Patrick Shanley's New Play THE DANISH WIDOW at Powerhouse, 7/16-27

New York Stage and Film and Vassar College, this summer celebrating the 30th year of their Powerhouse Theater collaboration, announced that Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Kyra Sedgwick will lead the cast of Academy Award and Tony Award winner John Patrick Shanley's new play The Danish Widow, which will premiere July 16-27, 2014 at Hallie Flanagan-Davis Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College. Shanley also directs the cast which also includes multitalented Broadway vets Craig Bierko and Matt McGrath, as well as stage and screen actress Annika Boras.

Mothers and Sons, which will run February 6-March 8, 2015, rounds out an exciting 40th Anniversary Season of superb contemporary theatre that also includes Lisa D'Amour's disturbing yet bracingly funny drama Detroit, the Tony Award nominated Outside Mullingar by Oscar-winning writer John Patrick Shanley, brownsville song (b-side for tray), the runaway hit of this year's Humana Festival of New American Plays, by rising playwrightKimber Lee, and Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair's musical whodunit Murder for Two, nominated for this year's Drama League and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Minnesota Opera to Serve DINNER AT EIGHT During its 2016-17 Season

At its annual meeting today, Minnesota Opera announced its commission of Dinner at Eight, a new comic opera by composer William Bolcom and librettist Mark Campbell, based on the play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. Minnesota Opera will give the world premiere during its 2016-2017 season at Ordway Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Actor/playwright Joseph Assadourian, like Charles Dutton and Lead Belly before him, discovered his theatrical voice while serving time behind bars. His new one-man play, The Bullpen, which he wrote and stars in, will begin an open-ended Off-Broadway engagement at The Playroom Theater (151 West 46th Street between Broadway and 6th Avenue) on Thursday, June 12th. Richard Hoehler directs this black comedy, which features Assadourian in 18 different roles. Opening night is set Sunday June 22nd. Check out a first look below!

Just last night, Drama Desk and Tony Award winner Laura Benanti ('The Sound of Music Live!', Gypsy, Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) hosted the 59th Annual Drama Desk Awards at The Town Hall (123 W. 43rd Street).

OUTSIDE MULLINGAR, THE WHIPPING MAN & More Set for George Street Playhouse's 2014-15 Season

Artistic Director David Saint has announced the slate of plays scheduled for the New Brunswick theatre's 2014-2015 season. George Street, which celebrated its fortieth season in 2013-14, continues the celebration with a slate of four plays ranging from direct-from New York dramas, to an a capella musical celebrating barbershop; to an examination of the Jewish faith in the years following America's Civil War. John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar, direct from Broadway, opens the season in a production directed by Mr. Saint. John Markus and Mark St. Germain's a capella musical The Fabulous Lipitones follows, directed by Michael Mastro. Matthew Lopez's searing drama The Whipping Man begins 2015, followed by the 25th Anniversary Production of John Guare's Six Degrees of Separation, also directed by Mr. Saint. One additional production is yet to be selected, and will be announced at a later date.
