John Manzelli, producing Artistic Director of City Theatre, announced that casting and director slots are complete for Summer Shorts 2013, the eighteenth edition of fast and often hilarious short plays that South Florida theatre audiences have come to expect as the perfect kick-off to summer theatre. The Annual Summer Shorts Festival includes an all-new Summer Shorts production, a new family musical and CityWrights: Professional Weekend for Playwrights including the announcement of the winners of the 2nd Annual City Theatre National Award For Short Playwriting.

Havana in the early 60's, just after the Bay of Pigs debacle and the Cuban Missile Crisis-- a time in Cuba best known for re-entrenchment of revolutionary ideals, coupled with the ever-growing influence of (and dependence on) Soviet Russia. A family loyal to the Revolution has been rewarded by Castro's government with an enormous home. Carmen, the matriarch of her small family and a fervent revolutionary, has been assigned the official watchdog of the neighborhood. The play deals with the growing psychological and political forces which strain and eventually unravel their very existence.

Stranded on a deserted island with his daughter, a usurped duke is granted his chance at revenge. By invoking a storm, he shipwrecks the man who ruined him. Also among the passengers is the young man who awakens his daughter's first stirrings of love.

34th Annual Carbonell Award Winners Announced

34th Annual Carbonell Award Nominations Announced

Les Miserables at Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables led the pack with a dozen nominations. Broadsword at Miami's Mad Cat Theatre Company and Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them at Plantation's Mosaic Theatre tied with five nods each as the most recognized plays for the annual honors to be held on Monday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

A rocking new Shorts 4 Kids line-up for families with tunes penned by Grammy Award Winner Cyndi Lauper and breakout artist Lisa Loeb ('Stay: I Missed You') along with a mix of fast and funny plays for families and a new 'Create-a-Short' Contest featuring the work of young artists; the company's naughty, bawdy late night undershorts Series featuring sinful comedies by the nation's hottest talents along with music penned by Tony-nominated writer Michael John LaChiusa ('The Wild Party'); and its celebrated Signature Shorts Series, which returns to its strong comedic roots with previous festival favorites Christopher Durang ('For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls' and 'The Hardy Boys and the Mystery of Where Babies Come From') and South Florida's prolific Michael McKeever ('Splat!' and 'Laura Keene Goes On.') Signature Shorts will also feature a dark comedy by Harold Pinter.
