Museum of the Moving Image Features Classic Hollywood Films

Astoria, New York, October 22, 2015-Museum of the Moving Image is pleased to announce 'The Hollywood Classics behindWalkers,' a screening series presented in conjunction with the exhibition Walkers: Hollywood Afterlives in Art and Artifact, the Museum's first major contemporary art survey. Through the work of 45 artists in painting, photography, sculpture, print, and video,Walkers examines the lasting impact of 20th-century film on culture, and the ability of its imagery to be recycled and reinvented by artists. Exhibition curator Robert M. Rubin has paired these artworks with a selection of rare movie ephemera including scripts, set photos, and costume design sketches, that when viewed through a 21st-century lens, serve as works of art in their own right.

BWW Review: SUNNY THOMPSON Sparkles Brightly as MARILYN MONROE

Come an hour early to the El Portal Theatre and take a peak inside the lovely small Marilyn Monroe Theatre lobby, adjacent to the Mainstage and peruse the myriad of photos adorning the walls. They represent a delicious collection of candids of the iconic star. Then proceed on in to the Mainstage playing area for the 8 o'clock show ... you will gasp when Sunny Thompson comes on stage in character as MM. You first see her naked on a bed wrapped in silk sheets ...in live photographic implosions as the camera clicks away. The likeness will astound you.

BWW Reviews: Voices of the South Offers a Riveting AWAKENING

Poor 'Edna Pontellier' of Kate Chopin's THE AWAKENING - as 'corseted' by society as she is by the habiliments of the day. I'd like to imagine a tea party where she'd feel welcome. Let's see . . . whom to invite? One of Henrik Ibsen's stifled heroines - HEDDA GABLER or 'Nora' from A DOLL'S HOUSE; and there's 'Janie Crawford,' the African-American heroine of Zora Neale Hurston's THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD. What about Gustave Flaubert's MADAME BOVARY? Oh, yes, and let's not neglect the movies: Vivien Leigh's convention-daring 'Scarlett O'Hara,' her foot dancing away while she sports widow's weeds, or a black-wigged Bette Davis gyrating to get out of a small town in King Vidor's hothouse melodrama BEYOND THE FOREST. Now, that would be some group, but they'd all end up smashing the teacups.
