The Martha Graham Dance Company's 2018-19 Studio Series begins in November with Martha's Men, a program that focuses on the role of men and the masculine in Martha Graham's work. Martha's Men will take place on Tuesday, November 13, and Wednesday, November 14, at 7pm, at the Martha Graham Studio Theater, 55 Bethune Street (11th Floor), in Manhattan.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will continue its Broadway Center Stage series with Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's Little Shop of Horrors, helmed by director Mark Brokaw. Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of The Temptations plays a strictly limited pre-Broadway engagement beginning tonight, October 11 - November 17 at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre following this summer's highly acclaimed engagements at the John F. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents a world premiere Kennedy Center commission, Long Way Down, running October 27 - November 4, 2018 in the Family Theater. Based on Jason Reynolds's New York Times best-selling book, this timely and compelling production follows Will, a fifteen year-old whose brother has just been murdered. Told entirely in free-form poetry, Long Way Down captures the potent minute Will spends in an elevator as he decides whether or not to take revenge. On the ride down, mysterious guests appear at each floor, and Will realizes there might be a bigger story to be told.
Teatro Paraguas partners with Austin, Texas' Ground Floor Theatre to present the New Mexico premiere of There and Back, a play by Raul Garza. The show opens on Thursday, November 8, running for two weekends at Teatro Paraguas with performances Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m, and a Sunday matinee November 11 at 2:00pm. MOVEIUS Contemporary Ballet (MOVEIUS), pushing the boundaries of ballet to tackle policy issues affecting society, will premiere Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall for its commission at The Kennedy Center. The 35-minute ballet uses Stravinsky's Rite of Spring score and storyline as the backdrop for revisiting the 2008 financial crisis on its 10-year anniversary. The company will also present an excerpt from its acclaimed Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet—which they recently presented at the Global Climate Summit in San Francisco. Performances will take place October 13-14 at the Millenium Stage at 6:00 p.m.
The American Veterans Center's annual broadcast special in honor of Veterans Day, American Valor: A Salute to Our Heroes, will once again return to television this year. Cleveland Play House (CPH) brings to life Lynn Nottage's complex story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rust Belt drama Sweat. Set in Reading, PA, this relevant story offers audience members suspense through its intricate portrayal of characters battling to survive in a city crippled by economic stagnation. CPH Artistic Director Laura Kepley will direct. Previews begin on October 13th, with press opening on October 19th at the Outcalt Theatre in Playhouse Square. On Saturday night, Washington, D.C. had a visit from one of the most popular American presidents and, while thoughts of a certain musical about a founding father hung over the evening, George Washington delivered a charming concert in the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater. To clarify, Mr. Washington himself was unavailable for the evening since he's been dead for two centuries. Christopher Jackson, however, who received a Tony nomination for his portrayal of our first president, served as a great alternative.
