Green Day's American Idiot had the punk rock band's fans out in force for the band's rock opera - even if the staged version of the 2004 concept album was a little less than the sum of its parts.

William Peace Theatre concludes its 2015-16 season with the punk rock musical, AMERICAN IDIOT, April 21-24 at Kenan Auditorium on the William Peace University Campus in downtown Raleigh. This production marks the show's Raleigh premiere.

As previously announced, double platinum selling artist Newton Faulkner joins the cast of Green Day's explosive Tony Award-winning musical, AMERICAN IDIOT, on its UK tour this spring. Newton will be taking on the role of Johnny from May 2016 after Matt Thorpe, who will open the role from tonight, 19 March at the Curve Theatre, Leicester until 7 May at the New Theatre, Oxford. I saw the touring production of AMERICAN IDIOT when it played at The Peabody Opera House a while back. I was eager to see it, being a fan of Green Day's music, and this rock opera, in particular. It was a great show, but the one thing that stuck in my mind afterward wasn't the performers, or even the great songs, but instead it was the scenic design. Which brings me to New Line Theatre's intimate production of this extremely tuneful and highly politicized show; a natural for this company to tackle, since they consistently provide fuel-injected presentations of a wide range of material that covers the gamut from neglected newer shows to classics that need some new life pumped into them. It's what they do so extraordinarily well. The disconnect I felt with the touring production vanished in the cozy confines of The Marcelle, and the scenic design wasn't a distraction, instead it became a complement to the anger, frustration, and call to arms that informs this period of terrorism and paranoia in our nation's history. This is a real hit, that genuinely rocks the house! So, get your tickets now.

Happy Birthday, Billie Joe Armstrong! Best known as the lead vocalist, main songwriter and lead guitarist for the American punk rock band Green Day, Armstrong recently brought one of his most popular albums to Broadway- American Idiot. In 2010, Armstrong joined the cast of American Idiot, which won two Tonys, for one week in the role of St. Jimmy. He replaced the original Broadway cast member Tony Vincent in fall of 2010 and returned to the role for 50 performances in January 2011.

Prior to a UK tour beginning next month, the Old Joint Stock Musical Theatre Company are currently presenting American Idiot at their resident home in Birmingham. Winner of two Tony Awards, the show opened to great acclaim on Broadway in 2010 after a short out-of-town run and has enjoyed productions all over the world including a successful West End run last year. Featuring the Green Day back catalogue, the show also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, as well as being responsible for the music and lyrics, also co-wrote the book alongside Michael Mayer whom directed the original production.

Acoustic power doesn't mean this guy can't rock. The Daily Mail writes that singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner will join the UK tour of AMERICAN IDIOT at the New Alexandra Theatre on May 10, taking over for Aaron Sidwell. The site also reports that the production is eyeing a return to the Arts Theatre this summer.
