PBS SoCal announced the winners of its 9th Annual PBS Kids Writers Contest, who will be honored at a special ceremony at the Los Angeles Public Library on June 6. The creative writing competition was open to children in grades K-3, and is designed to promote the advancement of children's literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. More than 774 students from the greater Los Angeles and Orange County area entered original stories that included their own illustrations. Submissions were the largest in the contest's history.

Second Thought Theatre's 2018 season continues this June with the world premiere of Enemies/People by Dallas-based playwright and artist Blake Hackler. Making her Second Thought directorial debut is Kara-Lynn Vaeni, a theatre and opera director and educator at Southern Methodist University. Second Thought Artistic Director Alex Organ returns to the STT stage for the first time since The Great God Pan in 2016 to star as Tom Stockmann. Loosely adapted from Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, the play is "a timely world-premiere about the search for truth in the age of alternative facts." Enemies/People begins with previews on Wednesday, June 13 and runs through Saturday, July 7. Mae West was definitely a woman who played by her own rules in all aspects of her life. She dismissed barriers, boundaries, fears, judgements and prejudices and always believed women needed to be in charge of their own lives. Her play SEX was both outrageous and pornographic in 1926, full of playfulness and lots of camp as well as topical storytelling about the battle of the sexes. As the show's director Sirena Irwin shares, "SEX is a story of survival, imprisonment, fear, revenge, transformation, freedom, and love. It is a feminist perspective from nearly 100 years ago that invites us to reflect on where we've progressed and where we've stagnated. Mae West, in her wisdom, tried to open minds with humor and heart."
