On Sunday September 29 at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal, Los Angeles theatre actor/singer Will Collyer presented Will Collyer in Concert directed by Mandy Kaplan and with musical direction by Brett Ryback. The 75-minute set featured guest appearances from Kaplan and Melissa Lyons. Collyer is an exceedingly affable 34 year-old openly gay actor who looks more like 19. Cute, drole and consistently mobile, Collyer did a retrospective of his life so far, which included his birth - very amusing segment on the music his mother was listening to in hospital when she gave birth to him - boyhood background, college days, his first kiss with another boy, local musical theatre, and a tribute to his life partner of 14 years... a mixture of banter and songs that he grew up with, some of which he actually performed in shows.
Red Branch Theatre Company's Executive Producer Stephanie Williams and Managing Director Tiffany Underwood Holmes unveiled the titles for the 2014 season this past weekend at the company's opening of Tick, tick... BOOM! Starting the season off with a bang on St. Patrick's Day (March 17, 2014), renowned American musical theatre composer Jason Robert Brown will present a benefit cabaret entitled 'I Could Be In Love With Someone Like You.' This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime event given the opportunity to see this prominent composer in a rare concert appearance in the theatre's intimate space.
Arden Theatre Company begins its 26th season of great stories with Parade, the musical with book by Alfred Uhry and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Directed by Terrence J. Paper Mill Playhouse will launch its 75th Anniversary Season with the world-premiere, Broadway-bound musical Honeymoon in Vegas, based on the Castle Rock Entertainment motion picture of the same title. Honeymoon in Vegas features music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown(The Last Five Years, Parade, 13) and book by Andrew Bergman (director and screenwriter of the film). Woo-Hoo! Thanks to OC's 3-D Theatricals, Southern California wasn't deprived of a revival of FUNNY GIRL after all. And, gosh, to top it off, they've even managed to find a Fanny Brice audiences can genuinely admire: Broadway and MAD TV alum Nicole Parker. This admirable new production of the classic Jule Styne/Bob Merrill musical plays the Plummer Auditorium through September 22 then moves to the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center for performances on September 27-29.

This past weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of discovering the Greater Houston Area's best kept secret. Ever since The Masquerade Theatre announced they were permanently closing on April 27, 2012, I have been going through Masquerade withdrawals. Other theatre groups, namely Michael J. Ross' Music Box Musicals among others, have sprung up in their absence and offer musical productions of the quality and caliber to fill the void that was left. As good as these productions are, they just aren't the same. Of course, Sunday's closing performance of Jason Robert Brown's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD at The Masquerade Theatre's Artistic Director Phillip Duggins' Zack's Mac Shack, a new restaurant and cabaret performance space, in Galveston, Texas wasn't the same either, but it was pretty close.
