Interview: Crystal Rae Tells a Challenging Story About a Loving Father with On The Verge Theatre
by Christian Gill - Sep 23, 2022

That's the truth I'm hoping to be a part of. I'm hoping to be a part of a movement where the face of black men isn't just always so frownish. They're just more opportunities to see men as fathers who love the opportunity to be a father. I'm hoping that the writing gives that opportunity for us to see a black man enjoying being both a husband and a father and his voice in the community and what that meant and how reverberated in his community. That's important to me.

by Kelvin Douglas - Jun 5, 2017

If you value a time when neighbors actually engaged in conversation: whether frivolous or meaningful, if you can sympathize with the brokenhearted, if you can identify with a time in history that many people will never forget (Americas' first elected African American President, Barack Obama), then FRONT PORCH SOCIETY is for you.

BWW Review: FENCES at The Ensemble Theatre, a Barricade of Emotion
by Bryan-Keyth Wilson - Feb 16, 2016

It was circa 1993 when I was introduced to the brilliance of August Wilson by my high school theatre teacher Rodney Sheffield. I remember reading the play in one day, and from then on I was infatuated with Wilson's writing style and dynamic characters. Being a black kid in the theatre, there wasn't much for me to identify with, so Wilson quickly became a theatre icon in my eyes. Fast forward to 2000 and I got to play Cory in my last year of undergrad. My thesis was on the parallels of Wilson's FENCES and Miller's DEATH OF A SALESMAN. Here we are 16 years later and this play has crept up on my radar yet again! I had the pleasure of seeing The Ensemble Theatre's production of FENCES during the month of February and it was a great way to start my celebration of Black History Month.

BWW Reviews: KNOCK ME A KISS - A Moving and Powerful Glimpse at an Unsung Hero
by David Clarke - Feb 1, 2013

Perhaps one of the greatest achievements of theatre is its ability to shed light on an issue or people that the audience may not be wholly familiar with. The Harlem Renaissance is the well-known and highly lauded period of time when African-American artists became exposed to and appreciated by mainstream audiences. The Harlem Renaissance introduced Americans and even the world to the soul and heart of African-Americans, showcasing humanity and beginning to dismantle the stigma of animalism, livestock, and even chattel. Most of us are familiar with the celebrated heroes of the movement, like Langston Hughes and W.E.B. Du Bois; yet, we are wholly unfamiliar with W.E.B. Du Bois' daughter, Yolande Du Bois. We are even less cognizant of her marriage to poet Countee Cullen.
