Undermain Theatre will present Jane Wagner’s THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE from June 11–28, 2026. The one-woman comedy, originally performed by Lily Tomlin, examines American culture, feminism, identity, and human connection through a series of interconnected characters portrayed by a single performer.

The Bent, the Coachella Valley’s LGBTQ+ theatre, is presenting a wonderfully directed and acted and technically superb dramedy, IN THE WAKE, by Lisa Kron. The play is well-written and generates lots of laughs and lots of pathos, although I consider it a bit too wordy. Still, it is well worth seeing.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe is a one actor play examining life, relationships, and art on Earth. The play opens with an introduction to Trudy, a kooky bag lady who serves as a medium for extra-terrestrials attempting to understand life on earth. Trudy attempts to explain the complexities of human life to the aliens through a series of vignettes. The audience and the aliens are introduced to eight other women, all portrayed by the same actor.
