BWW Review: Engrossing, Disturbing WINNERS AND LOSERS at Woolly Mammoth

When the lights come down, we're treated at first to the sort of amiable, snarky chit-chat one associates with Comedy Channel. The two performers, James Long and Marcus Youssef, skim the surface of American culture and even ask the audience for suggestions. But after luring us with the sort of 'Canadian Nice' that we expect from our neighbors up north, the pair's conversation lurches into darker territory; and then it goes into overdrive.

WINNERS AND LOSERS Coming to Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, in association with Theatre Replacement, Neworld Theatre and Crow's Theatre of Canada, is pleased to announce that Canadian theatre artists James Long and Marcus Youssef will bring Winners and Losers to DC this fall. Since its premiere in December 2012 at British Columbia's Gateway Theatre, the show has enjoyed successful performances at international venues and festivals including Denmark's Aarhus Festival and the INTERsection festival in Terni, Italy. Winners and Losers runs at Woolly from October 26 to November 22, 2015.

Soho Rep to Present WINNERS AND LOSERS, 1/2-2/1

Following a critically-acclaimed international tour, Soho Rep., in association with John Adrian Selzer, presents the New York premiere of Winners and Losers (January 2-February 1), a fierce and funny saga about what friendship can sustain. On the cusp of turning 40, longtime collaborators Marcus Youssef and James Long got an email from a mutual friend touting a self-help pyramid scheme. This unexpected note inspired the two men to take a frank look at their own lives. In this autobiographical piece, Youssef and Long, directed by Chris Abraham, sit at a table and play an invented game called "winners and losers." They name people, places or things-Beyonce Knowles, Mexican food, their fathers-pronouncing each one a winner or loser. What begins as a simple game rapidly descends into a merciless and brutal appraisal of each other's families, backgrounds and life choices.

BWW Reviews: THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY

Firehouse Theatre Project, touted as Off-Broadway on Broad Street, was transformed from a decommissioned fire station to an intimate theatre space in the early 1990s. And for Kristoffer Diaz's THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY, a 2010 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the space has changed once again to take on the persona of a small wrestling arena. A serviceable ring complete with ringside seats brings greater authenticity to the 'main event.' But outside the ring, Edwin Slipek's set design feels neglected.
