IFC today revealed five new 'slightly off' original comedies in development: Almost Asian, a series chronicling the life of a mixed-race millennial in Los Angeles; Annika Erotica, a series following a young Colorado pastor who harbors a secret passion for writing erotic novels under a pen name; Art Thieves, an adventure comedy following three misfit criminals who fancy themselves to be the Robin Hoods of the art world; Beth, a comedy about a happily-agoraphobic man and his uneasy journey back to the outside world; and the satirical and politically provocative sketch comedy The Middle Passage. The Poets' Theatre and The Suffolk University Theatre Department will present a day of new play readings on Saturday, June 10th at Suffolk's Modern Theatre. Playwrights include American Repertory Theatre Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus Robert Brustein; National Book Award author James Carroll; Suffolk Professor of Theatre Wesley Savick; and Suffolk alumni Theo Goodell and Nick Wilson. Set in the WLC Performing Arts Center's Raabe Theatre, WLC students along with Director Christopher Elst steer Liz Shipe's swashbuckling tale into one very enthralling version of 18th century Irish pirate Anne Bonny's life. Theater RED's world premiere production takes the audience's breath away when the cast ascends swaying ladders, swings on ropes across the stage and flashes their sword play while these men and women 'pirates' cast about for a new ship to find plundered treasures.
