This cast of nearly fifty students, hailing from twelve different schools from the Northshore area of the New Orleans Metropolitan area, is certainly fulfilling expectations. It is always a challenge to produce a show of this magnitude, but for Director, Brent Goodrich, being able to recruit talent from all over our community has made this production not only possible, but even more sensational.
Afflicted with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy that required nine major surgeries before he hit his teens, Reggie Codrington has a mother, Joyce Codrington, who used to exercise him four times a day. Now she is the one in pain and when her son learned that the antioxidants in cherries can help reduce pain and inflammation, he brought her some. It worked. She began to feel better and her discomfort eased. That's the inspiration behind “Cherry Sweet,” the joyous first single from the urban-jazz saxophonist's “Against The Odds” album from M.A.N.D.A.T.E. 1812 Productions will present the American premiere of Tom Wells' comedy Broken Biscuits. Named for the boxes of broken cookies in every cupboard in England, Broken Biscuits premiered in Newcastle upon Tyne before touring the UK in 2016. Broken Biscuits stars a trio of young artists making their 1812 debuts, Amanda Jill Robinson, Leigha Kato, and Michael Macri. Broken Biscuits will play October 4th thru the 28th at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Street in Center City. Opening night will be Wednesday, October 10th at 7:00pm.

A year ago, Becki McDonald and Proper Hijinx Artistic Director Stefany Cambra officially met at the One Minute Play Festival, where they were both directing. Cambra had just returned to her high school alma mater as the new Oral Interp coach for the Plano Speech and Debate Team. Immediately, this formed a connection between the two directors. McDonald was also a Plano alum and they were both coached by the same set of educators that helped them build the foundation of skills they now use as professional artists in the DFW Theatre community.

Never fear, because a TV series is on the horizon. People always complain that the movie is never as good as the book, that so many things are overlooked due to time restraints. The best thing about a TV series, on the other hand, is that there is time to explore all those smaller nuances and bring the book to life and make it much closer to the contents of the book.
A mannequin manufacturer by day, James Chiao will be fulfilling his dream with the world premiere of his musical TENOR BY NIGHT September 22, 2018 at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood (with preview performances at the Rose Center Theater in Westminster, August 17 through 26). James took two subjects he's most familiar with (mannequins and singing) and mashed them together.
In 1967, an enigmatic singer, songwriter and producer named Bobbie Gentry rose out of the Mississippi delta and enchanted audiences around the world with her beautiful, captivating voice and her "Ode To Billie Joe." An unconventional, beguiling song with simple acoustic guitar and sparse production, and notably without a discernible chorus, the song introduced Gentry and her style of storytelling that was very different to the confessional song writing of other emerging female singers. The song caused a lot of commotion as it shot to number one in America and knocked The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" off the top spot. When the album Ode To Billie Joe was released the following month, it topped the charts and was the only record to displace Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band from its 15-week reign. Over the next several years, Gentry, whose birthday was this past Friday, July 27, released seven studio albums and broke ground in numerous ways as one of the first female musicians to write, produce and even publish her own music. She also produced her elaborate stage shows via her own production company and was the first female singer songwriter to be afforded her own BBC TV series in the UK where she was wildly popular. She became one of the most iconic and influential artists of the 1960s and 70s, and then in the early '80s she made her final appearance and disappeared from the public eye completely, never to return.

For the past several summers, I have attended the Festival of Arts and The Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. But this year, I also decided to also visit two other art festivals along Laguna Canyon Road rather than spend any time cruising the town as I had done before. The full-day of exploring all the artistic delights on display this year at all three locations left me dazzled by all the talent on display, while wishing I had lot of extra income to purchase and bring home many of the awe-inspiring items that caught my fancy. But the real highlight of the day was viewing the abundance of 'local color' on display in this summer's 'Under the Sun' themed Pageant of the Masters.
