Due to popular demand, Nashville Repertory Theatre has extended its production of the multiple Tony Award-winning musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Performances have been added through Saturday, November 1. Sweeney Todd runs October 4 - November 1 at TPAC's Johnson Theater (with preview performances October 2 - 3). Tooting Arts Club presents Sweeney Todd, featuring Olivier nominated Siobhan McCarthy from the original London cast of Mamma Mia! and ITV's Bad Girls as Mrs Lovett, all set in London's oldest pie shop. Directed by Bill Buckhurst with musical director Ben Cox, Sweeney Todd (Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim; Book by Hugh Wheeler) will play Harrington's Pie and Mash Shop, Tooting, 21st October to 29th November. Press night is set for Monday 27th October, 7.30pm.

Amongst the vast majority of musical theatre devotees, there is little debate that Stephen Sondheim is the greatest writer that the artform has ever known. So, as I sat watching TheatreWorks Florida's soaring Opening Night performance of his darkest masterpiece, SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, I found my mind consistently going over his three principles of lyric writing: 1) 'Content dictates form.' 2) 'Less is more.' 3) 'God is in the details.' Now, before I go much further, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this production, especially the phenomenal voices and inventive staging, and this show is a must see for any local lover of Sondheim's work. I doubt that you will find a better sounding group of actors on an Orlando stage any time soon. Music Director David Foust clearly did incredible work on this production.
