In a departure from traditional seasonal fare, two local theater companies are bringing us back to the simpler days of yesteryear, staging live radio productions of Christmas shows set in the 1940s. Stoneham Theatre offers the frothy, musical bagatelle CHRISTMAS ON THE AIR while Merrimack Repertory Theatre presents an adaptation of the holiday film classic, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO PLAY. Replete with evocative sound effects and on-air commercial messages, both plays invite audience participation for applause and a range of emotional reactions, to replicate a live studio broadcast.

This season's revival of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's Pulitzer Prize-winning play YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU opens on Broadway tonight, and in honor of the playwriting pair's long list of contributions to the theatre, we've rounded up some of their most notable works. SPORTS PLAY, an unflinching exploration of the close relationship between sports, nationalism and violence by the Nobel Prize winning author of The Piano Teacher, Elfriede Jelinek, receives its English Language premiere on the eve of the London 2012 Olympic Games in Lancaster. The production then tours the UK, finishing in London for a run July 30 to August 4 at the Chelsea Theatre.

The classic film It's a Wonderful Life is brought to the stage by Dramatic License Productions in a unique presentation, re-imagined as THIS WONDERFUL LIFE, and finding one actor taking on all the roles. Mark Setlock and Steve Murray's adaptation condenses 130 minutes of screen time into 75 minutes of pure fun. It's a tremendous undertaking with the wealth of diverse characters that parade through this venerable work based on Philip Van Doren Stern's story 'The Greatest Gift', and actor/director Alan Knoll is more than up to challenge.
