Outlaw Poet Alan Kaufman Shares His Mother's Letters of Surviving the Holocaust in New Memoir

Alan Kaufman recently appeared at the Osher Family Jewish Community Center in Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he spoke about his mother's letters which detailed how she fled from the Nazis during World War II. He also discussed his memoir, Drunken Angel, the story of his descent into alcoholism and how he finally overcame it.

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 10/15- BYE BYE BIRDIE

Today in 2009 the first Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie opened at Henry Miller's Theatre (now the Stephen Sondheim Theatre), where it ran for 117 performances. Originally titled Let's Go Steady, the satire on American society is set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957. The original Broadway production was a Tony Award-winning success. It spawned a London production and several major revivals, a sequel, a 1963 film and a 1995 television production.

Tony Award-winning playwright/lyricist Greg Kotis (Urinetown) returns to the New York stage with the World Premiere of GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT (seven plays for five actors). Written and directed by Kotis, performances begin tonight, October 10 at The People's Improv Theater (aka The PIT).

Stephen Sondheim to Receive 54th Edward MacDowell Medal Today

The MacDowell Colony will award composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim with its 54th Edward MacDowell Medal today, August 11. The MacDowell Colony, the nation's first artist residency program, has awarded the medal annually since 1960 to an individual artist who has made an outstanding contribution to his or her field. This year marks the first time a luminary has been chosen from the realm of musical theatre and Sondheim's generous offering of his talents to the stage made him a clear choice.

Alex Bleeker & The Freaks Launch Summer tour Tonight in Albany

'New Jersey-born Alex Bleeker is an old soul. For his sophomore album, How Far Away, he lets that come into play fully. Over 11 tracks, he deals with the autumnal phase of lost love, the point after the grieving subsides and you start figuring out what you're supposed to do next. As with his last album, Bleeker cobbles together a ragtag collection of 'freaks,' including Mountain Man's Amelia Meath, who provides gorgeously weighty backing vocals on four tracks, Woods' Jarvis Tanviere, Real Estate's Jackson Pollis, Big Troubles' Sam Franklin, among plenty of other like-minded musicians who lend sparkling instrumental flourishes and a full-bodied backbone to Bleeker's pained yowl.

WOODS Announces Full Summer/Fall Tour

Woods is hitting the road this Summer & Fall, with dates running from now til the end of September. In July the band will tour the East Coast and Midwest with Parquet Courts

Alan Kaufman Presents on Allen Ginsberg Exhibit at the Contemporary Jewish Museum

The first time Alan Kaufman met Ginsberg, in the early '70s, the younger writer was an undergraduate at Queens College and heard that the poet would be reading at Columbia and rushed over to hear him. Later, Kaufman worked with Ginsberg throughout the '90s, occasionally traveling with him to conferences abroad. In Kaufman's memoir, Drunken Angel, he featured Allen Ginsberg as a mentor and friend.
