BWW Review: BOATWRIGHT at Bunbury Theatre

Boatwright is an original play written by and starring Emmy Nominated Actor Patrick Tovatt about an eccentric man getting up in years living in a humble abode where he spends his days writing and singing little ditties on his guitar and building boats. One day, a young man walks into his establishment and what was once a quiet and simple life is instantly turned on its head. With a set conceived by three-time Emmy award-winning designer David Weller, this play is gorgeous and makes the stage at this theater seem much larger than it is in real life while keeping the good taste to present it in a simple fashion appropriate to the material.

BWW Review: SEX WITH STRANGERS at The Liminal Playhouse

This two-person show begins in a remote getaway where a reticent but gifted writer, Olivia (Lauren Argo), has sought seclusion to write a novel. In the middle of a blizzard, a brash and youthful Sex-blogger, Ethan (Winston Blake), bursts in, disrupting Olivia's quiet. Appearing to be complete opposites, Olivia more attracted to the older culture of literature, and Ethan wildly success in the world of social media, they find common ground as writers and quickly make one another's acquaintance. Worlds collide as they uncover the complexities of sexuality and romance in the age of the internet, and they show one another the value of the present, hopes for the future, and the dangers of the past.

New Civil War History Book, KENTUCKY'S REBEL PRESS, Released this Week

Throughout the Civil War, the influence of the popular press and its skillful use of propaganda was extremely significant in Kentucky. Union and Confederate sympathizers were scattered throughout the border slave state, and in 1860, at least twenty-eight of the Commonwealth's approximately sixty newspapers were pro-Confederate, making the secessionist cause seem stronger in Kentucky than it was in reality. In addition, the impact of these rebel presses reached beyond the region to readers throughout the nation.

BWW Review: ST. NICKAKLAUS AND THE HANUKKAH CHRISTMAS at Bunbury Theatre

What does a family do when their beloved father starts showing signs of dementia? Do you take him in and try to keep him comfortable or do you send him to an assisted living facility where experienced personnel will be there to take care of him? It's the question at the heart of Juergen Tossmann's latest play St. Nickaklaus and The Hanukkah Christmas.

BWW Review: CLYBOURNE PARK at The Liminal Playhouse

I have watched some plays that were awarded the Pulitzer Prize and wondered, 'was this REALLY the best American play of the year?' Watching this production of Bruce Norris' Clybourne Park that thought never entered my mind. This is a play for which the word 'great' is fully justified, a reading of the American character in the last two generations destined to stand as a landmark for theatre in this country.

BWW Review: TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE at Bunbury Theatre

Mitch Albom's book Tuesday's With Morrie told of the renewal of a friendship with one of his college professors in the months before the old man dies from ALS. It was a bestseller and popular television movie, and it remains an appealing inspirational story. The stage adaptation, by Albom and Jeffrey Hatcher, keeps the schmaltz at bay for most of its length with humor grounded by J.R. Stuart's performance in the title role.

BWW Review: BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON Rocks Mad Horse Theatre's Opening

Mad Horse Theatre in South Portland opened its 2017-2018 with another edgy, brilliant production that speaks to the company's reputation for crafting the unusual and provocative with consummate skill. That they had already programmed the 2009 Off-Broadway hit, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson before the tragic and untimely death on September 9th of its composer-lyricist Michael Friedman, only added impact to a production that is angry, powerful, funny, and hugely contemporaneous.
