THE BLOOD QUILT, BASKERVILLE & More to Premiere at Arena Stage in 2014-15 Season

Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith reveals the 2014/15 season lineup for the company's 65th season and fifth year in the Mead Center for American Theater. As a national center focused on showcasing American voices and artists, this season is designed with range through productions that are emotional, uplifting, funny and thought-provoking.

Kennedy Center Announces Lineup for WORLD STAGES: International Theater Festival 2014

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will host 22 theatrical offerings from 20 different countries during WORLD STAGES: International Theater Festival 2014 that will run for three weeks March 10-30, 2014 throughout the Center. The international festival features contemporary theater works offering 13 fully staged productions, 4 theater-focused installations, 3 readings of new works, and 2 forums. From Olivier and Tony Award-winning puppetry to innovative perspectives on old classics, a diverse showcase of theatrical expression will be represented by countries spanning the globe including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, England, France, Iceland, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestine, Scotland, South Africa, Sudan, Syria, and the United States.

Winter Miller, Marya Hornbacher & More Set for RAPE AID: FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS RAPE, 12/17

Fed up with a culture that spends more energy warning girls how to avoid rape instead of teaching boys rape is always wrong, playwright Winter Miller created Rape Aid, an experiment in activism, theater and charity with an all-inclusive post-show dance party. For Rape Aid, a half dozen artists were commissioned to make short pieces (plays, monologues, songs, films) for an evening to incite dialogue on the subject of rape.

SOUNDS OF DESIRE to Play Ware Center, 11/5

"Sounds of Desire" is as play that features monologues by nine highly distinctive Iraqi women, all played by one in a tour-de-force, highly reviewed actress. "Sounds" tells a story of what it means to be a woman in a strongly-Muslim country - torn apart by war -- with views different form our own of a woman's place in society. Ms. Raffo will be performing the concert version of this play which was originally commissioned and performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. During this performance, she will be accompanied by acclaimed Middle Eastern instrumentalists and vocalists. The one-night-only and only-in-Lancaster performance is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., the Ware Center, 42 North Prince Street, Lancaster.

Harry Hamlin & More to be Honored at A.C.T.s' Conservatory Awards Luncheon, 10/28

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2013-14 Conservatory Awards, which recognizes and honors outstanding alumni of A.C.T.'s award-winning actor training program and pays tribute to donors and organizations who have provided significant support to the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) Program Scholarship Fund. The third annual Conservatory Awards luncheon raises necessary funding for M.F.A. Program scholarships while celebrating A.C.T.'s accomplishments with award winners and current M.F.A. Program students. The winners of the five awards to be presented are Emmy Award-nominated actor and A.C.T. M.F.A. Program honorary graduate Harry Hamlin, who receives The Edward Hastings Career Achievement Award; actress of stage and screen Heidi Armbruster, who receives The Rising Star Award; actor and Shakespeare Iraq drama teacher Peter Friedrich, who receives the Contribution to the Field Award; Joan W. Sadler, who receive The Benefactor Award; and Wells Fargo, which receives The Champion Award. Lisa Peterson to Direct Noor's Next Highlight Reading, 10/7

Noor Theatre's Highlight Reading Series continues this Monday at 7:30pm with an excerpt of The Shadow Spirit, by Ibn Daniyal. Written in Cairo in the 13th century, this saucy, satirical piece offers a raucous glimpse into medieval Cairo's underworld of pimps, prostitutes and dirty dealings. This is a rare opportunity to hear one of Egypt's earliest secular plays, which was written by a contemporary of Chaucer.

Horizon Theatre Presents World Premiere of Suehyla El-Attar's THIRD COUNTRY, Now thru 10/20

The world comes to a small Southern town in Horizon Theatre Company's World Premiere of Third Country by Suehyla El-Attar. The play, directed by Horizon Co-Artistic Director Lisa Adler, is inspired by the Clarkston, Georgia community where thousands of refugees have been resettled over the last decade. In addition to the production, Horizon is partnering with more than 20 local organizations to bring this story to life through post-show discussions, opportunities to meet the people who inspired the play, special events, and a marketplace for refugee-made goods.

Culture Project's WOMEN CENTER STAGE 2013 Festival Kicks Off Today

Culture Project dives into the summer with the Women Center Stage 2013 Festival, today, July 8 - August 3, 2013 at the newly named Lynn Redgrave Theater (45 Bleecker Street). The month long Festival will feature works written, directed and produced entirely by women, including work by Lynn Redgrave (Shakespeare For My Father), Staceyann Chin (Def Poetry Jam on Broadway), Dael Orlandersmith (Yellowman, Beauty's Daughter), Lucy Alibar (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Dominique Morriseau (Detroit '67), Leila Buck (In The Crossing), and Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai ('Russell Simmon Presents HBO Def Poetry'), directors Gaye-Taylor Upchurch (Bethany, Harper Regan), Jackson Gay (Collapse) and Nicole A. Watson (2013 Drama League Directing Fellow), poetry composed by Afghan women collected by Guggenheim Fellow Eliza Griswold, and an evening written by girls ages 10-18 from Girl Be Heard, viBe Theater Experience, Urban Word NYC and the Prospect Theater Summer Teen Intensive.

Lookingglass Awarded Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Grant to Create 'Civic Practice Lab'

Lookingglass Theatre Company has been selected to receive a 37­-month grant of $155,000 from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation's Artist Residencies to Build Demand for the Arts Program. The purpose of the grant is to support an artist residency at Lookingglass Theatre Company to conduct a project to increase demand for the performing arts.

Fadwa Faranesh, a bright, engaging Palestinian woman living in Bethlehem, hosts a cooking program from her home kitchen, where she prepares delectable dishes like tabouli and baba ghanoush in the traditional manner the women of her culture have been preparing them for centuries.  To her, food is an important connection between the past and the present.

New York Theatre Workshop's world premiere production of Food and Fadwa, written by Lameece Issaq and Jacob Kader, and directed by Shana Gold, opened last night, June 7.
