BWW Review: THE WICKER HUSBAND, The Watermill Theatre

The Wicker Husband is a folk musical written by Rhys Jennings, with music by Darren Clark. Half world-premiere, half returning reboot, its original March 2020 run was cut short when theatres shut for the pandemic. Now it’s back in all its heartening glory and, from start to finish, it delivers in droves.

THE WICKER HUSBAND Has its World Premiere at the Watermill Theatre

This Spring, the acclaimed Watermill Theatre presents the World premiere of a captivating and powerful new folk-inspired musical. The Wicker Husband, by Rhys Jennings and Darren Clark, was the winner of the inaugural MTI Stiles + Drewe Mentorship Award in 2016 celebrating new British musical theatre writers and was included in the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's 30th Annual Festival of New Musicals in New York.

Trevor Nunn's production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC debuted to critical acclaim at London's Menier Chocolate Factory in November 2008 and subsequently transferred to the West End where it played a successful limited engagement through July 25, 2009 at the Garrick Theatre.

Sydney Theatre Company's first main stage production for 2011 is the Australian premiere of Sarah Ruhl's acclaimed Broadway comedy In The Next Room or the vibrator play. Pamela Rabe directs Jacqueline McKenzie as Catherine Givings, an 1880's woman whose husband Dr Givings (David Roberts) marvels at the effectiveness of a newfangled electric invention he uses to administer remedial treatment to women suffering from ‘hysteria'. The STC production opens at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House, on 11 February, running to 27 March 2011, followed by tours to Melbourne, Wollongong, Canberra and Parramatta.

Sydney Theatre Company Extends IN THE NEXT ROOM Through 2 April

Sydney Theatre Company's first main stage production for 2011, the Australian premiere of Sarah Ruhl's In The Next Room or the vibrator play will have an extra week of performances at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House. The show will now close there on Saturday 2 April 2011.
