Ford's Theatre Announces LINCOLN LEGACY PROJECT Events, Sept-Oct 2013

Paul R. Tetreault, Director of Ford's Theatre Society, announced the special event schedule for the third year of The Lincoln Legacy Project-this year thematically connected with the Society's production of the stage play The Laramie Project (September 27-October 27, 2013), and recognizing the 15 years since Matthew Shepard was abducted and killed in an anti-gay hate crime in Laramie, Wyoming. The multi-year Lincoln Legacy Project encourages people of differing viewpoints to engage in meaningful and respectful dialogue about diversity and understanding through a range of programming including performances, panel discussions, special museum exhibitions, education programs and more. This fall, Ford's presents The Laramie Project to spark conversation about social injustice, bigotry, bullying and violence against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, and to take steps toward understanding, inclusion and equality.

New Bronze Bust of Lincoln Wins Praise

On April 3rd, the New-York Historical Society unveiled a life-size bronze sculpture of Abraham Lincoln. The event, which attracted such personalities as singers Tony Bennett and Judy Collins, writer Gay Talese, editor Nan Talese, Barnes & Noble CEO Leonard Riggio, media magnate Sumner Redstone, and Actor Andre de Shields, highlighted one of the finest sculpted likenesses of Lincoln ever produced. For Long Island, New York sculptor and educator Frank Porcu, the launch of what is arguably the beginning of a new and exciting phase in his career cannot be overstated.

Ford's Theatre Director Paul R. Tetreault announced the Theatre's 2013-2014 season will open with a new production of The Laramie Project, 15 years after the killing of Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard. The play is presented as the cornerstone production for the Ford's Theatre Society's Lincoln Legacy Project, a multi-year effort dedicated to sparking dialogue in the nation's capital around issues of social injustice and the ideals of equality for which Abraham Lincoln stood. A series of free special programs and events will be offered in connection with the play in September/October 2013.

On the 203rd anniversary of Lincoln's birth, the Metropolitan Museum presents a special performance of 'Lincoln Seen and Heard,' a program that has been performed at the White House, Ford's Theatre, the George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton Presidential Libraries, and other venues. Actor Stephen Lang (Avatar, Terra Nova, A Few Good Men) reads the words of Lincoln, as the Metropolitan Museum's Harold Holzer, an award-winning Lincoln scholar, narrates and illustrates with Lincoln photographs. Lincoln was frequently photographed at precisely the time of his most important speeches, and this program combines his words and pictures to evoke the real Lincoln-from his days as prairie politician to the presidency and immortality.

TCG Books Publishes LINCOLN Screenplay

Theatre Communications Group (TCG) today announced the publication of Tony Kushner's critically acclaimed screenplay for Lincoln, now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg. Based in part on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin's book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, the published screenplay of Lincoln, available in both paperback and a limited edition hardcover, contains a Foreword by Kearns Goodwin and eight pages of color photos from the film.
