Acorn Productions Expands 2010-11 Season Plans

Acorn Productions, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing and developing the performing arts in Southern Maine, unveils plans for the 2010/11 theater season. In keeping with Acorn mission to encourage members of the Greater Portland community to experience live theater as both participants and audience members, the company continues to produce three signature events: Phyzgig, the Maine Playwrights Festival, and Naked Shakespeare. This season the company also adds two new series of performances in the Acorn Studio Theater in Westbrook: the Studio Series and Fairy Tale Players. All of Acorn's productions involve sharing with audiences the results of long-term collaborations that focus on the creative growth of affiliated artists. These performances are presented in a variety of both traditional and non-traditional venues at affordable ticket prices that allow access for people of all economic means. During the upcoming 2010/11 season, Acorn produces events at spaces ranging from Portland Stage Company to Battery Steele on Peaks Island, showcasing the talents of over 100 talented local actors, directors, designers and playwrights.

Acorn Shakespeare Ensemble's THE TEMPEST Ends Run 4/20

The Acorn Shakespeare Ensemble, presenters of the "Naked Shakespeare" series, announces that the company's abridged version of The Tempest, which will be performed on Thursday, March 18 and Friday, March 19 at Luther Bonny Talbot Hall on the USM Portland campus, will also be performed twice at the St. Lawrence Arts Center on Monday, April 19 and Tuesday, April 20. These added shows will take place on "dark nights" during the upcoming Maine Playwrights Festival. Naked Shakespeare's production of The Tempest features 9 actors from the Naked Shakespeare company and is directed by company member Harlan Baker, who has given the piece a Caribbean flair to evoke the island on which the action of the play takes place. All four performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public, with a $5 suggested donation.

Acorn Productions announces that the company will kick off their 2009/2010 season of dramatic readings of new scripts by Maine playwrights with AN ARMY OF ONE, by Laura Emack. This full-length play follows the story of booksmart high school senior Joan, who poses as a potential enlistee to expose hardball recruiting, but ends up responding to her country's call by a committed emissary she cannot dismiss. The script will be brought to life by actors from Acorn's 'Naked Shakespeare' Ensemble as well as students studying their craft in the Acorn Academy Academy. This reading is the first of a series of five events that will take place over the next few months to assist Acorn's staff in choosing the one play that will be given a full production at the St. Lawrence Arts Center next spring as part of the Maine Playwrights Festival.

Acorn Productions announces that the company has selected 5 full-length plays to be given dramatic readings in the Acorn Studio Theater as part of the process of choosing a featured play for this year's Maine Playwrights Festival. The scripts were chosen from the 17 pieces submitted this fall by Maine-based playwrights and address issues ranging from race relations to aging and military recruiting practices.
