STAGE TUBE: Will Swenson Talks PRISCILLA!

As BroadwayWorld just announced, Olivier Award nominee Tony Sheldon and Tony Award® nominee Will Swenson (Hair) will lead the cast of the pre-Broadway North American company of PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT THE MUSICAL, written by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott and directed by Simon Phillips. The spectacular new stage musical will begin performances at The Prince of Wales Theatre in Toronto for a twelve-week only, pre-Broadway engagement beginning October 12, 2010 and officially opening on October 26. BroadwayWorld has learned that the West End hit, PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, has been extended for a fourth time and will continue to play the Palace Theatre into 2011. Bookings are open through 28 May 2011. The show's star, Jason Donovan hangs up his heels and says farewell to PRISCILLA on 29 May, 2010 after 14 months and over 450 performances.

As BroadwayWorld has reported, Deadline.com revealed that Matt Cavenaugh and Will Swenson may join original cast member Tony Sheldon for the Broadway premiere of PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT. BroadwayGirlNYC revealed on her twitter that Jessica Philips and Joshua Buscher may be joining the cast, as well. Today in an article out in The Australian, Tony Sheldon's mother reveals that Sheldon, who originated the role of Bernadette in Australia and is now starring as the character in the West End, will make the Broadway transfer next season. Sheldon was nominated for a 2010 Olivier Award for his performance.

Yesterday, Sunday 14 February, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical won the Best Musical Award, voted for by readers of Whatsonstage.com. In addition Oliver Thornton won Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Brian Thomson won Best Set Design and the late Ross Coleman won the award for Best Choreographer. According to an equity casting notice, the West End hit, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, will open on Broadway at a house to be announced on March 6, 2011. According to the same notice, the production will first play the Prince of Wales Theater in Toronto, with previews beginning October 12, 2010.

As previously reported, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical will celebrate a year in the West End on 23 March 2010 having completed over 425 performances at the Palace Theatre since its opening last year. From 8 March Jason Donovan (Tick) and Oliver Thornton (Adam) will be joined by Don Gallagher as Bernadette, as booking for the show extends until 26 February 2011. Over the summer (6 June - 5 September 2010) there will be Sunday performances of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical at 3pm. The show is reportedly Broadway-bound thereafter in 2011.
