Merola Announces Conductor, Director For First-Ever Commissioned Work

In 2019, San Francisco's acclaimed Merola Opera Program will present the first opera commissioned in the Program's history, the world premiere of If I Were You, by distinguished American composer Jake Heggie and noted librettist Gene Scheer. This ground-breaking work will be presented August 1 - 6, 2019, at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre. Today it was announced the opera will be conducted by Nicole Paiement and directed by Keturah Stickann. Information is available at www.merola.org. Tickets will go on sale in Spring 2019.

VIDEO: Get A First Look At On Site Opera's AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS

On Site Opera (OSO) will present Gian Carlo Menotti's holiday opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen December 6-8, 2018. In partnership with Breaking Ground, New York City's largest provider of permanent supportive housing for the homeless, performances will feature a chorus made up of community members who have experienced homelessness. Tickets will be free, part of OSO's “Opera Free For All” initiative.

Florentine Opera Launches Season with Live Recording of PRINCE OF PLAYERS

The Florentine Opera Company is kicking off its 2018-19 season with Prince of Players by American composer Carlisle Floyd, October 12 & 14, 2018 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. This will be the Midwest premiere of Floyd's latest opera. The Florentine's production will also be recorded for international release. 

American Composer Gordon Getty Turns 85

American composer Gordon Getty celebrates his 85th birthday on December 20, 2018. Mr. Getty's music has been widely performed in North America and Europe in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, London's Royal Festival Hall, Vienna's Brahmssaal, and Moscow's Tchaikovsky Hall and Bolshoi Theatre, as well as at the Aspen, Spoleto, and Bad Kissingen Festivals.

Opera Memphis' 30 Days of Opera returns September 1-30, 2018. SFCM to Host Fourth Biennial Rubin Institute for Music Criticism

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the fourth biennial gathering of the Stephen and Cynthia Rubin Institute for Music Criticism, a groundbreaking initiative for educational and financial support that identifies and engages emerging young writers in the art of classical music criticism and creates a sustainable funding model for professional journalists at news organizations across the United States. Taking place October 25-29 at SFCM and surrounding Civic Center venues, the Rubin Institute will, for the first time in its history, include jazz in its lineup of world-class concerts. Award-winning author, critic, essayist, and producer Gary Giddins will join the cadre of industry-leading journalists as guest critic.

On Sunday June 24, 2018, Los Angeles Opera gave a matinee presentation of two one-act Gordon Getty operas, USHER HOUSE and THE CANTERVILLE GHOST, which LAO calls SCARE PAIR. USHER HOUSE is Getty's 2014 edgy, operatic version of of Edgar Allan Poe's story, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. THE CANTERVILLE GHOST is Getty's realization of the Oscar Wilde story.

BWW Review: DINNER Now Being Served at NYU's Opera Lab and American Opera Projects

What's left to say about Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party"--that milestone of 20th century feminist art now on permanent display at the Brooklyn Museum--that hasn't already been said? Actually, quite a bit, according to the students from the Opera Lab of NYU Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program (GMTWP), who have taken a handful of the pieces and used them--and the work as a whole--as inspiration for a series of short operas, under the guidance of the Lab's co-directors, Randall Eng and Sam Helfrich.

Opera Memphis Announces Dennis Whitehead Darling First McCleave Fellow

Opera Memphis is proud to announce the launch of The McCleave Fellowships, a first-of-its-kind program designed to identify and nurture emerging artists of color in opera. Memphis-based stage director Dennis Whitehead Darling will be the first to receive one of the fellowships, which will ultimately be open to singers, directors, coaches, and conductors of color. 

NYU Tisch, the Brooklyn Museum, and American Opera Projects to Present Feminist Mini-Operas

The Dinner Party Operas, a showcase of eleven original mini-operas inspired by Judy Chicago's iconic feminist installation The Dinner Party, a multi-media work housed in the Brooklyn Museum, will be presented this May in New York City by the NYU Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program (GMTWP), the Brooklyn Museum, the NYU Tisch Department of Design for Stage & Film and American Opera Projects (AOP). Six of the operas will be performed on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. at NYU Tisch's GMTWP Black Box Theatre, located in Manhattan at 715 Broadway, between Washington and Waverly places, on the second floor. The remaining five operas will be performed on Sunday, May 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium at the Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY 11238. Each under 15-minutes long, the operas were written and composed by students in the NYU Tisch GMTWP Opera Lab and will be performed by professional opera singers with piano accompaniment. The Steve Silver Foundation And Beach Blanket Babylon Announce 2018 Scholarship Finalists!

Jo Schuman Silver, producer of Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon, announced today the nine Bay Area high school seniors selected as finalists for The Steve Silver Foundation and Beach Blanket Babylon "Scholarship for the Arts."  Each of the finalists will perform live in front of family, friends and a panel of celebrity judges on Monday, June 4. One winner in each category-singing, dancing, and acting-will be presented with a $15,000 check to be used towards their college education. The nine high school senior finalists who will perform are:
