On May 6-8, 2010, the National Symphony Orchestra Pops will present NSO Pops: Sondheim at 80, a concert celebrating the 80th birthday of 16-time Tony Award®-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim.

Stephen Sondheim is widely acknowledged as the most innovative, most influential, and most important composer and lyricist in modern Broadway history. He is the winner of an Academy Award, numerous Tony Award, multiple Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. Some of his other accolades include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center Honors (1993), the National Medal of Arts (1996), the American Academy of Arts and Letters' Gold Medal for Music (2006) and a special Tony Awardâfor Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre (2008).

Stephen Sondheim turned 80 on Monday, March 22nd, 2010 and he celebrated this landmark event with Roundabout Theatre Company at a special performance of Sondheim on Sondheim and star-studded tribute at Roundabout's 2010 Spring Gala: Sondheim 80.

Longtime collaborators James Lapine and John Weidman announced the renaming of Henry Miller's Theatre to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. The renaming of the theatre is dedicated to Stephen Sondheim, the greatest and best known artist in American musical theatre on his 80th birthday. The announcement was made at the curtain call following Roundabout Theatre Company's gala performance of the new Broadway musical Sondheim on Sondheim.

The Stage Door Players continue their current season with upcoming productions of MASTER CLASS, BREACHED WAILS, and COMPANY.

Laurel Mill Playhouse announces auditions for Company which will take place on Thursday, March 11at 7:00pm and on Saturday March 13 at 10am. Eight women and six men are needed. Actors may audition bringing sheet music for the accompanist that will be provided. Sixteen bars of a ballad or up tempo song will be requested. Company will open on May 21 and run through Sunday, June 13. Performances will run on Friday and Saturday evenings with two selected Sunday matinees.

Taken from a 1974 television special titled 'Mitzi... A Tribute to the American Housewife' comes this week's entry, a very bizarre and somewhat risqué reworking of 'The Little Things You Do Together' from Stephen Sondheim & George Furth's COMPANY.

Met with some of Sondheim's harshest criticisms (a rarity within his top-notch career full of well-received hits), MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG-his musical play told in reverse-is quite a challenging piece to take in. As Chance Theater's current production (performing through March 7 in Anaheim Hills), theater co-founder and director Oanh Nguyen certainly lived up to his theater's name and took a respectable chance on mounting a musical that may not be everyone's cup of tea. Though the source material seems like it Merrily Trudges Along, Chance Theater's production is buoyed by a collective creative enthusiasm that's wonderfully palpable and exuberantly infectious all throughout the show's performance.

Composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who penned the score and lyrics for several critically acclaimed Broadway musicals including SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, currently running at the Walter Kerr Theatre, is the focus of a new interview on the theatre related podcast Downstage Center. Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) is proud to have Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine return to Studio 54 with Sondheim on Sondheim, a new original Broadway musical starring Barbara Cook, Vanessa Williams, Michael Arden & Leslie Kritzer. Music & lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim, conceived & directed by James Lapine. Sondheim on Sondheim will begin previews on March 19th, 2010 and open officially April 22nd, 2010 at Studio 54 on Broadway (254 West 54th Street). This will be a limited engagement through Sunday, June 13th, 2010.
