This morning, Film Independent announced that Aubrey Plaza (Ingrid Goes West, Legion, Parks & Recreation) will host the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The Spirit Awards are the primary fundraiser for Film Independent's year-round programs, which cultivate the careers of emerging filmmakers and promote diversity in the industry. Nominees were announced by Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians, Captain Marvel, Mary Queen of Scots) and Molly Shannon (Divorce, Private Life, Other People) at a press conference on November 16. Best Feature nominees include Eighth Grade, First Reformed, If Beale Street Could Talk, Leave No Trace and You Were Never Really Here. The show will broadcast live exclusively on IFC at 2:00 pm PT/ 5:00 pm ET on Saturday, February 23, 2019.
Amazon Studios today announced it has signed a first look television deal with Emmy Award-nominee Maya Rudolph, and her creative partner and Emmy Award-nominee Natasha Lyonne. The pair, under the Animal Pictures banner, will create original series for Amazon Studios which will be made available on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories.

In an election year marked by an outpouring of grassroots energy, artists are also working hard to make electoral change in the midterms. So far, 15 artists spanning a variety of genres have recorded songs for a free digital album, Songs for Swing Left. This is not a standard PSA or call to vote: downloading any of the tracks on this album will connect listeners to other Swing Left volunteers in their area as well as match them with high-impact things they can do (like canvassing and calling voters in nearby Swing Districts) to help flip the House blue in the upcoming midterm elections. What happens when a group of talented Chicago musicians, actors, improvisers, stand-ups, songwriters, and DJs collaborate on a web series? You get "STUDIO B," the three-episode workplace comedy of a struggling Chicago recording studio trying to make a comeback along with supporting its bizarre clientele. STUDIO B can best be described as "30 Rock" meets Spinal Tap coupled with original music by composer Julie B. Nichols. Each episode follows a different musical act entering the studio to record what they hope will be their break-through hit, while the studio staff hopes it will keep them afloat. The first season of STUDIO B will be released Monday, Oct. 22 at 10 p.m. and will be available on www.studiobseries.com, as well as on Vimeo, YouTube, and Instagram TV. The creators of STUDIO B are hosting a public launch party the date of the release (Monday, Oct. 22 from 5 - 10 p.m.) at The Joinery, 2533 W. IFC announced today the launch of a new original digital comedy series, Fortune Rookie, on the Comedy Crib (ifc.com/comedy-crib), the network's online hub for original, short-form comedy. Created by and starring Janet Varney (Stan Against Evil, You're the Worst), Fortune Rookie follows a fictionalized version of Janet Varney who, on the advice of a fortune teller in a bathroom, decides to leave showbiz behind and become a full-time psychic. The eight-episode series joins the Comedy Crib's current array of acclaimed web series including Frank & Lamar, The Mirror and Neurotica.
