BWW Review: Alex Leonard Celebrates Nat King Cole with L-O-V-E at Pangea
by Alix Cohen
- Jan 20, 2017
Alex Leonard is a classy performer. His relaxed, minimalist style and adherence to vocals as written take one back to an agreeable past. Jazz riffs weave around rather than obscure melody. Lyric meaning is gracefully maintained. Aided and abetted by expert veterans Jay Leonhart on bass and Al Gafa on guitar, Leonard saluted the great Nat King Cole at Pangea on January 18 with a bit of history, a couple of illuminating anecdotes, and signature songs.
BWW Review: PLAZA SUITE at Little Theatre Of Mechanicsburg
by Allison Rambler
- Jan 20, 2017
The Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg sits plainly on the side of a small road in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, unassuming to all those who pass by. It does not flaunt itself on flashing advertisements or a grandiose outward facade, and this in fact adds to the effortless charm that meets a theatre-goer as soon as they step through the door. But while the stage itself may be lacking in size, the performances presented there compensate for space with an abundance of talent. While the reviewer has only been privilege to one show at this establishment thus far, she is glad that she was treated to the vastly entertaining humor of PLAZA SUITE by Neil Simon.

As Opera News notes in a "Spotlight" double-page spread in the just-published February issue, Tucker Award-winning tenor Stephen Costello is now "at the top of his game." This spring, marking his house title role debut, he headlines Gounod's Romeo et Juliette (March 3-18) at New York's Metropolitan Opera, starring opposite Pretty Yende in Bartlett Sher's hit staging. By way of a preview, Costello and Yende will each sing romantic arias from the opera in a special Valentine's Day edition of WQXR'S Classical Beer Jam at the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space in downtown Manhattan, marking their first public appearance together (Feb 14). Opera lovers around the world can catch a live webcast of the performance on Facebook and WQXR.org. Meanwhile, the tenor may already be seen at the Met, channeling Frank Sinatra as the Duke of Mantua in Michael Mayer's Vegas setting of Verdi's Rigoletto (Jan 20-Feb 4), to which, last year, the New York Times found his "bright tenor … perfectly suited."
