Native Voices at the Autry continues its vital role as the country's only equity theatre company dedicated exclusively to developing the work of Native American playwrights with the world premiere Equity production of Stand-Off at HWY #37 by Vickie Ramirez (Tuscarora*), directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera, featuring 16 performances running from Friday, February 28 to Sunday, March 16, 2014 (previews Wednesday and Thursday, February 26-27) at the Wells Fargo Theater. Illustrating Native Voices' deep commitment to nurturing new works and seeing them fully realized, this production is the culmination of a pivotal, twelve-month development process that has included long-term dramaturgical support, extensive workshop opportunities and invaluable collaboration with a team of theatre professionals.
When they were still aspiring young artists Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar, TV star Josh Radnor, and two-time Tony Award-nominated actress Melissa Erico each spent a transformative summer in the Powerhouse Theater Training Program. Now in its thirtieth year, the renowned annual program at Vassar College will run from June 20-July 27, 2014 and is currently accepting applications. Participants choose a curriculum focused on acting, playwriting, or directing, and together form an Apprentice Company that performs works for the public. The program is available to rising high school seniors through college-age students, as part of the prestigious Powerhouse Theater collaboration between Vassar and New York Stage and Film.

African-American Shakespeare Company continues its 19th season with MEDEA, Euripides' infamous tragedy about a jilted wife exacting the ultimate revenge on a cheating husband. Dawn Monique Williams, a veteran of staging the classics, directs, with Leontyne Mbele-Mbong in the title role. At the gala 45th Annual Equity Jeff Awards held at Drury Lane Oakbrook on Monday, November 4, Steppenwolf Theatre Company's 'Good People' received the award for Production-Play in a large tier theatre. Principal Actress Mariann Mayberry was also honored for her role in this David Lindsey-Abaire play, which considers the dangerous consequences of holding on to the past or leaving it behind. William Brown received Best Director of a play for Writers Theatre's production of the French farce 'The Liar', adapted by David Ives.
