One of the biggest downers perpetrated by American culture is the characterization of Labor Day weekend as the 'unofficial end of summer.' But given what has passed for cabaret entertainment-at least the shows I was able to attend--since the 'unofficial start of summer' on Memorial Day weekend, the end of summer can't come soon enough. But my dismay over the hours lost watching average shows this season was tempered a bit by the pride and joy I felt watching the June performances of three strikingly attractive and talented 30ish brunettes with powerhouse voices-- Jackie Kristel, Karen Gross and Jodi Beck, who all staged entertaining shows as spring was turning to summer.

Vika Bull and a seven piece group, The Essential R&B Band, present a musical documentary of the life of the late Etta James, one of the most important names in Rhythm and Blues, and perhaps also the most tragic.

August's Live at The Hippodrome programme features a broad selection of music, comedy, cabaret and more including hip US singer and inimitable interpreter of the Great American Songbook James Torme; soulful jazz and blues diva Gill Manly; and an evening with Joe Longthorne, who will be returning to the venue following his sold-out performances earlier in the year.

Written by critically acclaimed UK author John Livings, At Last: The Etta James Story premiered at Melbourne's Athenaeum Theatre on 19 February 2013 (just over a year after Etta James' death in January 2012), and enjoyed a sell-out Sydney season in May. The show will play at the Her Majesty's Theatre Adelaide, for three performances today and tomorrow, 2 and 3 August 2013 following a season in Brisbane.
