1972: Dr. John Fryer dons an oversize tuxedo and rubber joke shop mask to become Dr. Henry Anonymous and confront the American Psychiatric Association with these words: 'I am a homosexual, I am a psychiatrist.' The latest work by renowned theatre artist Ain Gordon, 217 Boxes of Dr. Henry Anonymous, is a new play drawn from the 217 boxes of archive materials from national LGBT activist of Dr. John Fryer discovered by Ain Gordon during his two-year embedded artist status at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP). This new work is set to run, May 5-7, at the Painted Bride Arts Center, 230 Vine Street. All performances are at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20. Joyce Unleased to Showcase Works of Three Choreographers

The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc., moves beyond its historic Chelsea home to present groundbreaking performances in intimate spaces through Joyce Unleashed, a series of experimental work presented off-site. One of Finland's most talented young choreographers, Elina Pirinen will make her U.S. debut with her award-winning trio, Personal Symphonic Moment, performed at New York Live Arts (May 31-June 1). Brooklyn-based artist Anna Sperber's latest creation, Prize, will also be performed at New York Live Arts (June 3 & 4). Performance-based artist Vanessa Anspaugh will present The End of Men; An Ode to Ocean at Abrons Arts Center (June 8-11). Both Pirinen and Anspaugh are making their Joyce debut.

Stage musical Witches of Eastwick was adapted from John Updike's novel of the same name thirteen years after the film was released in 1987- starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. The show opened in London to mixed reviews but since then has been performed internationally. The last time it was seen professionally in this country was on the 2008 UK tour, starring Marti Pellow - a production I was fortunate enough to see.

SHORE is the third part of a trilogy exploring the complex terrain of identity, memory, ancestry, land, and community. Building on these themes, SHORE brings ideas and questions that emerged in the first two works -- the Bessie Award-winning The Thank-you Bar (2011) and the richly layered Niicugni (2013) -- out into the world. Throughout the trilogy, Johnson has asked: How can performance uniquely connect us to our land, our lives, and each other? The Emory Dance Company experiments with new viewpoints in contemporary dance in their fall concert, today, November 21 - 23 in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. This concert showcases the choreography of Emory faculty members Anna Leo, Lori Teague and George Staib, as well as guest artists Kristin O'Neal from the University of Florida and Emily Johnson, a current Schwartz Artist in Residence at Emory and director of Catalyst Dance in Minneapolis.
