The New York Choral Society Announces 2010-2011 Season

New York Choral Society (NYCS), under the leadership of Music Director John Daly Goodwin, launches its 52 nd season on September 11, 2010 at St. Patrick's Cathedral with a special performance, sponsored by the September Concert Foundation, in remembrance of those affected by the 9/11 tragedy.
Opera Orchestra of New York To Return With Concert Productions in '10-'11

The Opera Orchestra of New York will end its hiatus with two concert productions, The New York Times reports. For economic reasons, the company has not presented any operas since 2008, presenting recitals instead; however, the operas will return with Giacomo Meyerbeer's L'AFRICAINE and a double bill of Jules Massenet's LA NAVARRAISE and Pietro Mascagni's CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA.

The MIDEM Classical Awards Jury today announces the first Special Awards for the 2010 edition. The winners are Italian soprano Mirella Freni, Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca, German baritone Christian Gerhaher and the label Naïve.
Angela Gheorghiu Withdraws From MET's CARMEN, Elina Garanca Replaces Her 12/31

The Met has announced that soprano Angela Gheorghiu has withdrawn from the first six performances of a new production of Bizet's Carmen for personal reasons. Gheorghiu will be replaced by El?na Garan?a, who sang the title role of La Cenerentola at the Met last spring to great acclaim; that production was transmitted to movie theaters worldwide as part of the Met's Live in HD series.
Rolando Villazon Withdraws From The MET Opera's Les Contes d'Hoffmann

Rolando Villazón has withdrawn from the title role in the Met's new production of Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, scheduled for December 3, 2009 through January 2, 2010. He announced today that he is undergoing throat surgery and expects to return to the stage in 2010. The Metropolitan Opera looks forward to his return in future seasons.
