New Adventures & Re:Bourne are delighted to announce that Jamaal Burkmar is the winner of the 2015/16 New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA). Nearly 100 applied for the award. Burkmar was shortlisted with six other emerging choreographers: Corey Baker, Tara D'Arquian, Alexandra Green, Eleesha Drennan, Andrew McNicol and Matt Nicholson. Burkmar was chosen after a weekend of intervigews, debate and deliberation chaired by Bourne and his team of distinguished judges:

Matthew Bourne announced today the third New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA). Open to emerging choreographers of all ages, NACA follows the success of the 2012 and 2014 awards that helped launch the choreographic careers of James Cousins, Tom Jackson-Greaves and John Ross. In addition to the showcase awards in 2014 the judges made an additional award to Sally Marie to fund a Producer for 12 months and a Commissioning Award to Caroline Finn in partnership with Phoenix Dance Theatre. In June 2015 Finn was announced as the new Artistic Director of National Dance Company Wales.

Richard Bean's new play Great Britain opened in the West End on September 26,following a sell-out run at the National Theatre. Wendy Whelan, whom The New York Times has called 'America's greatest contemporary ballerina,' has danced with New York City Ballet for nearly 30 years. With the company, she has mastered Balanchine's neo-classical repertory, dance classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake and created works with many of today's leading choreographers. Following hip surgery and a successful recovery period, Whelan, 46, will return to City Ballet this spring season and will dance her final performance with the company on October 18.

I wanted to read Kafka's Metamorphosis before attending the Royal Ballet's production bearing the same name. But my own Kafkesque world intervened, so I never had the chance to follow Gregor and his transformation from human being to bug. I can only judge the production on its own merits, and not compare it to the book which, I think, is only fair.
