After years of criticism directed at Disney for giving in to stereotypes when portraying non-white characters and their cultures, one of the most refreshing aspects of the studio's latest 'princess' film is the creators' dedication to depicting the world of the title character with dignity, accuracy, and depth. Moana producer Osnat Shurer recently sat down with Deadline's Contenders to discuss the process of developing the island of Mata Nui.
MOANA Charts Way to the Top of the Box Office

There's just no telling how far she'll go! Moana, the latest Disney heroine, has rapidly found her footing among fellow Disney rulers; the film bearing her name (and featuring music and lyrics by Broadway's Lin-Manuel Miranda) swept past Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to claim the largest box office gross over the weekend. According to Variety, this places Moana third on the list of biggest 3-day Thanksgiving movie releases, just behind Frozen and Toy Story 2. Moana's total gross has reached a towering $81.1, putting the movie in the race alongside Frozen to become one of Disney's most successful titles of all time.

As we move into the holiday season, undoubtedly there is much for everyone to be thankful for, and if you head out to the movie theatre over the long Thanksgiving weekend, chances are good that you will be counting your blessings that the gods have brought Disney's latest animated musical MOANA into your life. With a screenplay by Jared Bush and music by Mark Mancina, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Opetaia Foa'I, MOANA is a gorgeous, charming film deserving of a spot amongst the Disney classics.
