Hailed as "one of the great amateur choruses of our time (New York Today) for its "full-bodied sound and suppleness (The New York Times)," The Dessoff Choirs continues its 94th season with Whitman and the Civil War: a spring concert inspired by the American poet and journalist Walt Whitman (1819-1892) and his relationship with the Civil War. As part of a season-long celebration of Whitman's bicentennial, Dessoff's 50 singers will perform exquisite choral settings of Whitman's poetry by Van, Clausen, Weill, and Stanford as well as the world premiere of Ian Sturges Milliken's Whispers of Heavenly Death. The feelgood musical Sisters Act come to Sweden! The premiere will take place on September 11 at the China Theater. It is a divine rap, funny and musical comedy, based on the 1992 Blockbuster movie, Sister Act, featuring Whoopi Goldberg. The musical was nominated in the US for five Tony Awards for 'Best Musical' and of course 'Best Music'. The captivating music is made by composer Alan Menken, a numerous Oscar winner, is known as the man behind many of Disney's greatest hits, eg 'Can you feel the love tonight' and 'Beauty and the beast'. In this swinging monastery, Menken has created a rosary of hits ranging from 70's disco in Barry White's spirit to perfectly tuned ballads. Of course, the musical also contains a huge dose of pat-friendly power gospel. The performance Sister Act proves once again that singing nuns definitely belong to the big musical scenes.

Award winning EMH Productions continues its 8th season with a romantic dramedy about love, relationships and marriage directed by local well known talent Scott Divine. This play skirts the line of farce in the tradition of Neil Simon, throwing in some real life tensions between the 3 couples it centers around: The newly formed couple deciding if marriage is right for them vs. their two sets of parents who are in various stages of unrest. This play got its start back in 1978 on Broadway a the Biltmore Theatre, notably starring Doris Roberts in the role of Saintly Grace, who sainthood undergoes some serious testing when it comes to having an affair. The playwright has since updated this play to reflect the advancement of the times in 1982 and then 2013, but its message has always remained the same. Just goes to show how some things remain relevant, regardless of the span of time.
On March 9th, Third Rail Repertory Theatre will screen The Tragedy of King Richard the Second and Antony & Cleopatra at the World Trade Center in downtown Portland. The performances were live-captured at London's National Theatre and will be screened in high-definition as part of Third Rail's National Theatre Live program, which brings the best of London Theatre to Portland audiences.
