San Francisco Opera Center Director and Merola Opera Program Artistic Director Sheri Greenawald, whose December 2020 retirement was announced in March, received the San Francisco Opera Medal at a special Zoom event organized by San Francisco Opera and Merola Opera Program. The Opera Medal, the Company's highest honor, was awarded to Greenawald for her extraordinary service and leadership with the Company.
New York Philharmonic Continues PROJECT 19

The New York Philharmonic will continue the initiative commemorating the centennial of the 19th Amendment with commissions of new works by 19 women composers. Project 19 launched in February 2020 with live performances of six World Premieres (three for full orchestra, three for smaller ensembles).

The New York Philharmonic has cancelled all previously scheduled concerts from January 6, 2021, through June 13, 2021, due to COVID-19. In compliance with New York State health regulations and on the advice of health officials, the Orchestra regrets being unable to resume concerts during the 2020-21 season.

The New York Philharmonic is featured in 'The 5th,' a four-movement podcast miniseries exploring the music, context, and legacy of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Then titled Grand Symphony in C minor, the work was the very first that the Philharmonic performed, in 1842, marking the symphony's US Premiere.

Tickets are now available for Phil the Hall, the New York Philharmonic's second annual $5 concert conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, Friday, April 3, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. The concert will feature Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man; Bernstein's Times Square: 1944, from Three Dance Episodes from On the Town; a movement from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5; Nina C. Young's Tread softly, one of 19 new works by women the Philharmonic commissioned as part of Project 19, celebrating the centennial of the 19th Amendment; 13-year-old New York Philharmonic Very Young Composer Paloma Alonso; and several works selected by the audience.

The New York Philharmonic has announced plans for the 2020–21 season, Jaap van Zweden's third as Music Director. Van Zweden once again conducts a wide range of repertoire, including four World Premieres, a US Premiere, and symphonic cornerstones. As in his first two seasons as Music Director, he continues to connect with New Yorkers through impactful projects, performances, and collaborations with other cultural institutions, and conducts the Orchestra on an Asian tour.

Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic will mark the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted equal voting rights to women, by commissioning and premiering works by 19 women composers. The multi-season initiative a?" the single largest women-only commissioning initiative in history a?" will launch in February 2020 with the first six World Premieres. Two more World Premieres will follow in Maya?"June 2020. The eleven remaining commissions will be premiered in future seasons. The commissioned composers are Unsuk Chin, Mary Kouyoumdjian, Joan La Barbara, Tania León, Nicole Lizée, Caroline Mallonee, Jessie Montgomery, Angélica Negrón, Olga Neuwirth, Paola Prestini, Ellen Reid, Maria Schneider, Caroline Shaw, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Joan Tower, Melinda Wagner, Nina C.
