Based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam and hit classic Broadway musical, Rodgers & Hammerstein's THE KING AND I is making its North Texas debut at the Music Hall at Fair Park, produced by Michael A. Jenkins (six-time Tony Award winner) and Dallas Summer Musicals, Inc., beginning tonight. This exciting new production features a revamped script, timeless songs, and a new physical production with an entirely fresh interpretation of the musical.

I remember the melodrama of the film Carrie (1976) and director Brian De Palma's splashy special effects more than anything else. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie really tore up the scenery in their overblown scenes together. Onstage Carrie The Musical brings out so much more. It really zeroes in on the problem of bullying among teenagers and shows the psychological consequences. When a shy girl Carrie (Emily Lopez) has her period for the first time in the girls' shower after PE class, she experiences a devastating ridicule by most of her classmates. She's bright, but dresses shabbily and doesn't know how to stand her ground. At home her mother Margaret (Misty Cotton), a Christian fundamentalist, abuses her in a different way, leading her to believe that she is basically bad and that only Jesus can saver her soul. Carrie discovers that she has telekinesis, a power to move objects at will. When things do not work out for her as she attemps to fit in at the high school prom, she takes control, punishing everyone around her.

Based on the novel by Stephen King, Carrie the Musical is an electrifying pop-rock musical about a bullied teenager with telekinetic powers who takes revenge on prom night with music by Academy Award-winning composer Michael Gore ('Fame', 'Terms of Endearment'); lyrics by Academy Award-winning lyricist Dean Pitchford ('Fame', 'Footloose') and a book by 'Carrie' film screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen.

And I listened to it and fell in love with the music. Last week we introduced you to Emily Lopez, soon to be playing Carrie in the revival of CARRIE THE MUSICAL at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. Today we meet Misty Cotton, the other powerhouse actor who will be leading the cast as the mother of all mothers, Margaret White. A day off from rehearsals gave Misty a chance to catch her breath and tell us a little about her road to CARRIE and what it's like stepping into this iconic role.

According to the Daily Mail, THRILLER LIVE's Gary Lloyd is set to helm Dean Pitchford, Michael Gore and Lawrence D. Cohen's revised version of CARRIE THE MUSICAL for Southwark Playhouse this summer. The show will begin May 1 for a four-week run. The team is planning on holding open auditions for the lead role.

St. Petersburg City Theatre continues its 90th Mainstage Season, presented by Raymond James, with Footloose, The Musical. Opening night is tonight, January 23, 2015 and the production runs through February 8, 2015.

Footloose opened to a packed house on Friday January 16 at the Barn Players Theater. Directed and choreographed by Guy Gardner, presented by the Barn Juniors, Footloose features middle school and high school students. Based on the screenplay by Dean Pitchford the stage adaption is by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie with music by Tom Snow and lyrics by Dean Pitchford.

Based on the iconic debut novel by Stephen King, Carrie the musical follows young misfit Carrie White and her classmates during their final days of high school. Carrie is bullied by the popular crowd, and is invisible to everyone else. While Carrie is held at the mercy of her cruel and over-protective mother at home, she discovers a special power that she's not afraid to use if pushed too far.
