BWW Review: New England Premiere of ABIGAIL/1702 Fits the Season
by Nancy Grossman - Oct 22, 2016

ABIGAIL/1702 is playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's exploration of the aftermath of the 1692 Salem witch trials. Merrimack Repertory Theatre and Director Tlaloc Rivas push all the right buttons to give the audience a scary ride. The outstanding design elements create an atmosphere that is spooky on many levels, and Rachel Napoleon is convincing as the troubled young accuser trying to escape her past.

BWW Review: N.E. Premiere of Morally Ambiguous UNCANNY VALLEY
by Nancy Grossman - Oct 11, 2016

Stoneham Theatre presents the New England premiere of playwright Thomas Gibbons' UNCANNY VALLEY, a view into the not too distant future when researchers have found a way to extend the human lifespan through artificial intelligence. While it raises more questions than it answers, its rich subtext and the fine work of Nancy E. Carroll and Lewis D. Wheeler combine to make this a compelling piece of theater.

Suspense on Stage this Fall, as MRT Presents ABIGAIL/1702
by Liz Cearns - Sep 26, 2016

This fall Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) presents the regional premiere of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's 'Abigail/1702', the haunting play that asks what might have happened ten years after the Salem witch trials. At the center of the story is Abigail Williams, the young accuser of 1692's Salem Village, as she tries to begin a new life after the hysteria has subsided-yet remains haunted at every turn by terrors of the past. Tlaloc Rivas directs.

BWW Review: THE TOTALITARIANS: Too True to be Good
by Nancy Grossman - Sep 7, 2016

Gloucester Stage Company presents the New England premiere of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's THE TOTALITARIANS, an over-the-top satire about an unqualified female political candidate wooing the electorate by promising 'Freedom from Fear.' GSC Managing Director Jeff Zinn makes his local directing debut and keeps everything moving at a good clip, and the four actors do what they can with a quartet of less than likable characters. If you like your humor broad, this may be the comic relief you seek during this chaotic election season.

BWW Review: HOME OF THE BRAVE World Premiere at Merrimack Repertory Theatre
by Nancy Grossman - Apr 26, 2016

Step back from the craziness of the current election season and into the zaniness of a fictional farcical political campaign in Lila Rose Kaplan's HOME OF THE BRAVE. Sean Daniels directs an ensemble cast in this good old-fashioned comedy, featuring family values, a dollop of magic, and a potential nominee you can wholeheartedly support. Loosely inspired by Moliere's TARTUFFE, Kaplan's play is the perfect antidote to real presidential politics.

Merrimack Repertory Theatre to Close Season with HOME OF THE BRAVE
by Tyler Peterson - Apr 4, 2016

Merrimack Repertory Theatre will close out its season in spectacular fashion with the world premiere of Lila Rose Kaplan's farce 'Home of the Brave.' The hilarious play follows senator Bernadette Spence (played by Boston favorite Karen MacDonald) as she desperately works to persuade her family to support her run for the Presidency. Loosely inspired by Moliere's 'Tartuffe,' 'Home of the Brave' is an old-fashioned comedy for new-fashioned times, wholeheartedly embracing sheer absurdity, shameless fun, and actors running/climbing/sliding all over the place. Maybe dressed as ninjas. Or in their underwear. Yet at its core, 'Home of the Brave' remains a big-hearted love letter to the American family. MRT's Artistic Director Sean Daniels directs.

BWW Review: RHINOCEROS: Collective Psychosis or The People's Choice?
by Nancy Grossman - Mar 5, 2016

The Suffolk University/Boston Playwrights' Theatre co-production of RHINOCEROS, newly adapted by Wesley Savick from Derek Prouse's translation, features a Boston setting, but maintains the themes of Eugene Ionesco's 1959 classic play from the Cold War era. Things being as they are, that sort of feels like the good old days, yet we are reminded that conformity, fascism, and totalitarianism have never gone out of style.
