Opera Parallèle has announced the repertoire for the company’s 2023-24 season, a new year of exciting debuts beginning October 27 and 28 with the world premiere of composer Kenji Oh and librettist Kelley Rourke’s family opera, The Emissary, based on Yoko Tawada’s award-winning novel.
A stellar cast brightens a Romberg favorite. Operetta, as a genre, arose in the 1850's and swelled into a widely beloved form of entertainment. In America its chief luminaries were Sigmund Romberg, Victor Herbert, and Rudolf Friml. From the 1920's to the '40's the modern musical gradually drove operettas from the stage (except for the happily undying works of Gilbert & Sullivan). And I miss them! So I greatly approve of Winter Opera's offering us this old piece.

Director David Little and company executive director Katherine Mayberry, who serves as dramaturge for this production, have created a script that combines sections of all three parts of Henry VI into a single production.
