The winners of the First Annual Berkshire Theatre Awards have been announced. Seventeen arts journalists voted on 120 nominees in 25 categories chosen from artists in the 75 live theatre productions mounted in Berkshire County and adjacent areas between October 1, 2015 and September 30, 2016.

In the last twelve months, more than 300,000 people attended a live theatre production in or around Berkshire County. With 75 stage productions employing hundreds of professionals, making theatre is an important cog in the area's cultural economy. In fact, many consider the region a hot spot for Broadway bound shows, and a popular summer destination for theatre-goers from around the nation.

The Tony nominated, rock n' roll megahit, Million Dollar Quartet, opens tonight, September 15, at The Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival. The show runs until October 1 at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse as part of the Festival's 2016 season. Based on the Dec. 4, 1956 recording session between Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, 'Million Dollar Quartet' features over 21 hits by the legendary artists. Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Managing Director Jeff Griffin, today announced that acclaimed actors (and married couple) Becky Ann Baker (currently featured on "Girls") and Dylan Baker (currently featured on "The Americans") have joined the cast of its upcoming production of Henrik Ibsen's PEER GYNT, directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, who becomes the company's new Artistic Director in July. 

The Directors Company, in association with Pascal Productions, will present A BETTER PLACE, a new work by playwright Wendy Beckett (Anais Nin: One Of Her Lives, A Charity Case) and directed by Evan Bergman (Love Therapy), will play a limited six-week engagement this spring at The Duke on 42nd Street, a NEW 42ND STREET project (229 West 42nd Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues).

Kitchen Theatre Company is celebrating its 25th season in 2015-2016, and the centerpiece is PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, a play that is a celebration of live theater and ensemble story telling: a great adventure with music told by a cast of twelve actors and a 'let's put on a show' spirit. Funny and full of surprises, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER opens for previews on Sunday, January 31 and runs for eighteen performances, through February 21st.  

59E59 Theaters will welcome kef theatrical productions with SENSE OF AN ENDING, written by Ken Urban and directed by Adam Fitzgerald. SENSE OF AN ENDING begins performances on Thursday, August 20 for a limited engagement through Sunday, September 6.

It could only be Swimming in the Shallows by Adam Bock, a comedy with a bite. Kitchen Theatre Company is trying to stop laughing long enough to say that the production is opening for previews tonight, April 29, with the press opening on May 2 and performances through May 17.
