On Friday night, May 30, Mayor Bill De Blasio and his wife First Lady Chirlane McCray saw A Raisin in the Sun and headed backstage at intermission to take photos with the company. Yesterday Julianne Moore hosted an afternoon tea in honor of Tony nominee LaTanya Richardson Jackson, currently starring as Lena Younger in A RAISIN IN THE SUN. Held at Lady Mendl's at the Inn at Irving Place, an impressive group of women from theatre, film and television, including LaTanya's fellow Tony nominated costars Sophie Okonedo and Anika Noni Rose, gathered to salute LaTanya. Although she was unable to attend, First Lady Michelle Obama did send a note which was read aloud by Julianne Moore after Ms. Moore made a toast to LaTanya. Samuel L. Jackson and Bart Freundlich crashed the party to enjoy the afternoon with their wives.

Boyd Harris and Layne Manzer Launch the Cole Theatre; ECSTASY to Play A Red Orchid, 8/25-9/28

Acclaimed Chicago actors Boyd Harris and Layne Manzer announce the founding of Cole Theatre, working under an Equity contract with non-profit status. With the tagline "victory of the people" as its battle cry, Cole Theatre is an arena for underused and under-sung artists to rise up and be seen louder and clearer. The name "Cole" is Greek for "people's victory." The inaugural show will be Mike Leigh's Ecstasy, staged at A Red Orchid Theatre in Old Town, August 25-September 28.

Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Executive Director Kate Lipuma announce a two-week extension of The Dance of Death by August Strindberg, in a new version by Conor McPherson and directed by Henry Wishcamper. The production, featuring Shannon Cochran (Alice), Philip Earl Johnson (Kurt) and Larry Yando (Edgar) now runs through August 3, 2014 at 664 Vernon Avenue, Glencoe.

Actors Alliance of San Diego is proud to announce A Professional Scene Study with Esteban Andres Cruz: The plays of Stephen Adly Guirgis at the Academy of Performing Arts: 5120-C Baltimore Dr, La Mesa, CA 91942. Jujamcyn Theaters and True Colors Theatre Company (Kenny Leon, Co-Founding Artistic Director) have announced that Ashley Herbert from Boston has won first place at the 6th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition held on Monday, May 5th at the August Wilson Theatre (245 West 52nd Street). Robert Upton from Chicago was the runner-up, and an honorable mention went to Atiauna Grant from Atlanta. Denzel Washington surprised the audience with a special appearance during the awards ceremony, and greeted all of the contestants afterwards. The event, which was free and open to the public, featured high school students from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, Portland and Seattle performing monologues by the late, legendary American playwright. Ashley Herbert, a junior at Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers, was named champion of the National Finals of the August Wilson Monologue Competition Monday night at Broadway's August Wilson Theatre.

Just last night, High school students from Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, and Seattle perform monologues by the legendary American playwright August Wilson as a part of the 6th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition. Emceed by Kenny Leon (True Colors Theatre Co-Founding Artistic Director), the event was judged by Pauletta Washington, Stephen McKinley Henderson, David Cromer, James A. Williams and Narda E. Alcorn, with a special performance from the upcoming Broadway Tupac Shakur musical Holler If Ya Hear Me including cast members Saul Williams, Christopher Jackson, and Ben Thompson.

Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun just opened last week at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street). Set on Chicago's South Side, A Raisin in the Sun revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis and matriarch Lena, called Mama. When her deceased husband's money comes through, Mama dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama.
