The New York Times reports this morning that producer Jeffrey Richards held a reading of THE FRONT PAGE, directed by Daniel Sullivan which starred Nathan Lane, Billy Crudup, John Larroquette and Dan Lauria. The paper reports that it was organized to hear if the play was commercially viable, with no word on whether it will enter a full production, or if producers will be after this cast to star.

Taking on one of Shakespeare's most problematic plays is merely one of the many challenges for Esbjornson and that has been even further compounded by the intense and sporadic rehearsal nature of playing two new productions simultaneously in repertory, as the Public is doing this season with MEASURE FOR MEASURE along with Daniel Sullivan's ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL - which was featured in this very column last week. Actors' Equity Association (Equity) announced today that The Public Theater's acclaimed production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is the recipient of its Extraordinary Excellence in Diversity on Broadway Award for the 2010-2011 Season. The Award will be presented at a reception at the Equity headquarters in New York City on Tuesday, June 7, 2011. In addition, Equity will receive a Mayoral Proclamation, presented by Commissioner Katherine Oliver, designating June 7th as Diversity on Broadway Day.

The Drama Desk Awards ceremony was hosted by Harvey Fierstein on May 23 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan Center. This year, for the first time, a 90-minute Highlights Special of the Drama Desk Awards Ceremony will be televised nationally on OVATION, the national cable network dedicated to presenting creative arts programming to national TV audiences. The ceremony will be given two primetime broadcasts plus four other airings between June 4 and June 19, 2011.

Having directed a handful of the most acclaimed performances of the season - among them Al Pacino and Lily Rabe in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, as well as GOOD PEOPLE'S Frances McDormand- the last thing you would expect Daniel Sullivan to be doing would be taking on one of Shakespeare's most problematic plays - ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL - and putting it on in Central Park; yet, Mr. Sullivan soldiers on.

ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL is a fairytale for grown-ups. This beguiling fable follows the low-born Helena, one of Shakespeare's most resourceful heroines, as she inventively surmounts obstacle after impossible obstacle in order to win the love of the aristocratic and haughty Count Bertram.
