MEMORY RIVER Opens At TADA On 2/25
by Gabrielle Sierra
- Jan 19, 2009
Paul Adams, Artistic Director and Derek Jamison, Associate Artistic Director, present Emerging Artists Theatre's workshop production of MEMORY RIVER by Vanda at TADA Theatre, beginning February 25. The production is directed by EAT member Troy Miller.
MEMORY RIVER is based on the amazing true story of 'HM,' a man who, treated for epilepsy in mid-20th century America when he was 16, suffered permanent loss of the ability to form new memories. In the decades that followed, his case provided crucial data in the scientific quest to understand how memory works. In this play inspired by Patient HM, a fictional neuroscientist is haunted by her memories as she treats a man who hasn't had a new memory in 55 years. MEMORY RIVER is part of Emerging Artist's Spring 2009 EATFest.
Says Vanda, 'I'm a licensed psychologist and I had been teaching Introduction to Psychology for quite a few years before I began writing this play. Part of the Intro course involves a unit on memory. In every memory chapter of every Introduction to Psychology textbook there is a mention of Patient HM. Usually, it says something like 'his doctors tried to cure his intractable epilepsy by removing his hippocampus and parts of his amygdala.' Then, the book goes on to tell the student that the operation worked! His epileptic seizures did come under control. However, he could never again form a new memory. One day after delivering this clinically dry information for yet another class I asked myself, 'Who is this guy?' That question led me to another: 'What does it mean to have a memory, or what does it mean to not have a memory?' These questions led me to write the play.'

New Cast Members Ireland and Pasquale Join Perabo and Sadoski in 'reasons to be pretty'
by Robert Diamond
- Jan 15, 2009
It was announced today that Marin Ireland, Steven Pasquale, Piper Perabo and Thomas Sadoski will comprise the four-person cast of this season's production of Neil LaBute's new play, reasons to be pretty, under the direction of Terry Kinney. Perabo and Sadoski appeared in this summer's smash Off Broadway world premiere for MCC Theater, with Ireland and Pasquale slated to join the cast for
the Broadway production. Preview performances begin Friday, March 13, 2009 at the Lyceum Theatre (149 West 45th Street) with an official opening night scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 2009. Tickets are on sale now through www.telecharge.com.
reasons to be pretty confronts America's obsession with physical beauty headlong. In Neil LaBute's new play, Greg's (Sadoski) tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his off-handed remarks about a female co-worker's pretty face (and his girlfriend's lack thereof) get back to said girlfriend (Ireland). But that's just the beginning.
The Vineyard Theater Presents THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY 2/3-3/15
by Gabrielle Sierra
- Jan 15, 2009
The Vineyard Theatre (108 East 15th Street) will present the New York premiere of The Civilians' newest work THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY, in a co-production with Los Angeles' Center Theatre Group, with previews set to begin February 3 prior to its official press opening February 22. Steven Cosson directs.
Written by Steven Cosson and Jim Lewis, with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY is a provocative new play with music about the growth of the evangelical movement in Colorado Springs, created by the documentary theatre troupe The Civilians. While conducting interviews with people involved with or affected by the mega-church movement, scandal broke about New Life Church pastor Ted Haggard and shook the entire city of Colorado Springs, providing the play's creators with an unprecedented opportunity to capture an important event as it was taking place, and providing the people of Colorado Springs the opportunity to express their opinions and concerns as those events unfolded. THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY is a fascinating and timely look at faith and how it affects the American landscape.

Review - Prayer or My Enemy: Pardon Me While I Have A Strange Interlude
by Kristin Salaky
- Dec 10, 2008
Eugene O'Neill might not have been the first playwright to have time come to a halt mid-conversation while characters reveal hidden thoughts through internal monologues - a technique I'm sure is familiar to more Americans through Groucho Marx's spoof of his Strange Interlude in the film version of Animal Crackers than by having seen the play itself - and I'm certain Craig Lucas, whose Prayer For My Enemy has its share of supressed asides, won't be the last. But while I wouldn't opt for dramatic lighting and stylized acting every time someone has a personal moment, the playwright's desire, as stated in his script, that, 'the manner of separating the inner from the outer can and should change throughout,' can cause a tad of confusion in this play where lack of communication is key. Sure, we get the point when someone turns to the audience and starts talking, but a post-performance read of the text made it clear that a lot of the lines said while directly facing someone had actually gone unheard.
