On October 31 and November 1 and 2, the toe-tapping, captivating trumpeter and singer Byron Stripling joins the Houston Symphony for a memorable showcase of ragtime masters, blues legends and jazz classics. A spectacular trumpeter with a very wide range, a beautiful tone, and the ability to blend together many influences into his own style, Byron is an extroverted performer who brings the audience into his music. The happiness that he exudes through his trumpet, his vocals and his words is reminiscent of Louis Armstrong, yet very much his own.

When I think of jazz musicians, I think of people with a certain level of sophistication; people who appreciate the finer things in life; people who are, honestly, a little intimidating.

Starting now, students enrolled at any New Jersey high school or college can visit the site to learn about entering the competition, with an internship with Sony Pictures Classics at stake as the contest's grand prize.

Legendary jazz vocalist Marlena Shaw will make her debut at Feinstein's at the Nikko for two performances only - tonight, October 11 (7 p.m.) and Sunday, October 12 (7 p.m.) Backed by the Marlena Shaw Quartet, Shaw will feature an evening of her greatest hits from throughout her 40-plus year career.

Music Director Jacques Lacombe and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra open the NJSO's 2014-15 concert season this weekend, October 10-12 with Orff's Carmina Burana in Newark, New Brunswick and Morristown. The concert opens with New Jersey composer George Antheil's McKonkey's Ferry as part of both the NJSO's New Jersey Roots Project and NJ350--a celebration of the Garden State's 350th anniversary in 2014. Debussy's Nocturnes rounds out the opening program.

59E59 Theaters will host the US premiere of CAFE SOCIETY SWING, written by Alex Webb and directed by Simon Green. Produced by Richard Darbourne Ltd (producer of last season's Drama League nominated All That Fall) and The Copasetic Foundation, CAFE SOCIETY SWING begins performances on Tuesday, December 16 for a limited engagement through Sunday, January 4. Opening Night is Sunday, December 21 at 7 PM. The performance schedule is Tuesday - Thursday at 7 PM; Friday at 8 PM; Saturday at 2 PM & 8 PM; Sunday at 3 PM & 7 PM.
