Not every Christmas is a happy one- that’s just the reality of growing up- but that doesn’t mean that the holiday season can’t still be special. You must make the most of every moment you can because you never know when those moments will run out. This lesson rang loud and true on stage at the Brookfield Theater during their production of 'Dot,' by Colman Domingo.
Sixty-five minutes of the most beautiful acapella tells the story of the British and German soldiers who put down their guns during the Christmas holiday of 1914 to come together as comrades during an all-too brief truce during World War I.
'I’m never in a situation where I’m thinking that now I’m gonna direct a pause. I answer the same way as in the previous one that if it makes sense to me then I let it be. But if it doesn’t make sense I start discussing with the actor why are you doing like this? What are you thinking, what are you feeling? And then you go through that' - Harjanne

A little over a year ago, I attended a performance of Giselle from the Staatsballett Berlin whilst in the knowledge that the next day Corona restrictions would mean a premature end to the run. Fast forward to this year and performances are going ahead under strict “2G” regulations (you must be recovered or vaccinated and wear a mask at all times). Favouring Victor Ullate’s (after Petipa) crowd pleasing Don Quixote over the Christmas tradition of Nutcracker this year, the company tackle the challenge gamely although this particular performance lacked the magical feel that going to the ballet at Christmas should give.

The loss of one of the brightest lights of the Great White Way has been terribly challenging to accept. I think everyone within the theatre community can share a story related to Sondheim that led them to where they are. For me, it was the production of West Side Story and the album of Sunday in the Park with George. The South African production of West Side Story, reminded me of the magic of theatre and it solidified my dream of being part of a story made for the stage. While the Sunday in the Park with George revival with Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford is my go-to album for inspiration.

It seems variety is the spice of classical music and opera in San Diego. The city’s symphony orchestra plans to appear in a dozen or more venues next year, and the opera company has used a different venue for each of its three recent recital concerts. The latest of these featured Mexican-born tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz, and the operatic tenor’s program choices continued the varietal spice. The first half began with five Italian canciones followed by four Spanish zarzuelas and concluded with two Puccini arias. But many in the audience were waiting for the all-mariachi second half. Their reward was 11 Mexican-Spanish favorites sung in front of the 10-piece Mariachi Continental de México led by musical director Silvano Chavez.
