I'm not sure that Broadway, or anyone for that matter, was asking for a jukebox musical about Gloria and Emilio Estefan's lives to take the stage in 2015, but after the success of musicals about Carole King (BEAUTIFUL) and recording industry legend Berry Gordy (MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL), I suppose you can't blame the pair (along with book writer Alexander Dinelaris) for trying. But, despite the handful of toe-tapping tunes, ON YOUR FEET! barely jumps off the page.

If you notice more smiling faces "downcity" this week, chances are you've spotted audience members fresh from a showing of ON YOUR FEET! at the Providence Performing Arts Center. This fun, thoroughly enjoyable production stylishly recounts the behind-the-music story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan as told through the legendary songbook they created with the Miami Sound Machine.

And, after long periods of dictatorships, revolution, communism, deprivation of food and other necessities of life, they have also developed survivor and 'can do' attitudes.

Last night, On Your Feet! opened with a bang to an enthusiastic crowd at the Hobby Center. An electrifying production, On Your Feet! classifies as a jukebox musical a production that weaves together an iconic artist's most popular songs with their biography (often focusing on the rise to stardom) to tell the artist's story through their own lyrics while adding all the elements of musical theatre. These biographical musicals can sometimes lose their footing in a focus either too completely on song or on biographical plot, but directed by Jerry Mitchell with a book by Alexander Dinelaris, On Your Feet! finds balance between a storyline of Gloria and Emilo's lives while being jam-packed with loud, catchy, and thrilling song and dance numbers.

There are jukebox musicals that utilize the catalog of a group to hang a story thread onto that may or may not fit particularly well, and there are those that are portraits of the songwriters themselves. I think the latter actually works the best, and that's what you get when you see ON YOUR FEET!, the Gloria and Emilio Estefan bio-musical that's currently playing at the Fox Theatre. If you're a fan of their music, and the strings of hits they created with the Miami Sound Machine, then you'll find plenty to enjoy here.
