Applications Are Now Open For 2019 Songbook Academy

The Great American Songbook Foundation has launched the nationwide application process for its 2019 Songbook Academy summer intensive, a one-of-a-kind performance program for high school students led by Foundation founder and five-time Grammy Award nominee Michael Feinstein.

86 Artists Awarded Spring MacDowell Colony Fellowships

The MacDowell Colony has awarded fellowships to 86 artists from 18 states and nine countries. Fellows will arrive from Texas, Maine, and Montana, and from as far as Chile, Australia, China, and Israel. They are working in seven disciplines, and 29 percent identify as culturally diverse. The fellowships are for upcoming late winter and spring residencies at one of the nation's leading contemporary arts organizations.

American Masters Celebrates Sammy Davis, Jr. and Charley Pride in Honor of Black History Month

This February, for Black History Month, American Masters profiles two iconic performers who broke new ground in entertainment as the Civil Rights movement gathered momentum in America: Sammy Davis, Jr., and Charley Pride. American Masters – Sammy Davis, Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me, the first major film documentary to examine the performer's vast career and journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America, premieres nationwide Tuesday, February 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings) and is available on DVD the same day through PBS Distribution. The PBS broadcast also features 20 minutes of exclusive bonus performance footage spanning Davis' 50-year career after the documentary. American Masters – Charley Pride: I'm Just Me premieres nationwide Friday, February 22 at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings). Both films will be available to stream the day after their respective broadcast premieres viapbs.org/americanmasters and PBS apps.

Actors Bridge Ensemble's acclaimed production of Sarah DeLappe's The Wolves and Cumberland County Playhouse's rendition of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street were named as the top shows of the year during Midwinter's First Night, the annual tribute to theater in Tennessee, held at Nashville's The Larry Keeton Theatre last Sunday night, January 13. HANDS ON A HARDBODY Comes to Wasatch Theatre

Wasatch Theatre Company (WTC) continues 21st season with a rollicking musical about 10 down-and-out Texans grabbing hold of their American Dream-in the form of a hardbody truck. The regional premiere of "Hands on a Hardbody" performs Friday-Sunday, February 8-23 at The Gateway in the WTC Black Box Theatre. Tickets to Hands on a Hardbody are available at wasatchtheatre.org.

RIVERDALE to Stage a Musical Episode Featuring Songs From HEATHERS

The CW drama series Riverdale is set to air the season three musical episode this Wednesday, according to TVLine. The episode will feature a staging of Heathers: The Musical, based on the 1989 cult hit film starring Wynona Ryder and Christian Slater.

Van Wezel Foundation Names Cheryl Mendelson New CEO

Chicago-based arts and education executive Cheryl Mendelson has been appointed the new CEO of the Van Wezel Foundation. Board Chair Mike Martella made the announcement today that Mendelson will take the helm in February, bringing more than 25 years of fundraising, business development, and strategic planning to the Foundation.

MURIEL'S WEDDING THE MUSICAL Opens in March

The highly acclaimed new Australian musical produced by Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Global Creatures, Muriel's Wedding The Musical, commences in Melbourne in March at Her Majesty's Theatre with previews from March 12 and opening night on March 23. The Sydney season at the Sydney Lyric Theatre commences with previews from June 28 and opening night July 4.

Opal Alladin, Keith Powell & More Will Lead TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS at the Old Globe

The Old Globe today announced the cast and creative team for the West Coast premiere of Tiny Beautiful Things, based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed (Torch, Brave Enough, Wild, 'Dear Sugar'), adapted for the stage by Academy Award nominee Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Instant Mom). Co-conceived by Marshall Heyman ('Dietland'), Thomas Kail (Hamilton, Fox's Grease Live!), and Vardalos, and directed by Globe favorite James Vasquez (American Mariachi, Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!), Tiny Beautiful Things will run February 9 - March 10, 2019 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, opening on Thursday, February 14. Tickets are on sale now starting at $30.00 and can be purchased online at www.TheOldGlobe.org, by phone at (619) 23-GLOBE, or by visiting the Box Office at 1363 Old Globe Way in Balboa Park.

SUPER BOWL GREATEST COMMERCIALS 2019, an interactive countdown special where viewers will be able to vote LIVE via specific hashtags for the All-Time Funniest Super Bowl commercial, will be broadcast Tuesday, Jan. 29 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. The special will be hosted by Boomer Esiason, analyst for CBS Sports' NFL pregame show THE NFL TODAY, and Daniela Ruah, star of CBS' NCIS: LOS ANGELES, and will originate from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, home of “Super Bowl LIII.”
