Once again, beginning Wednesday evening at 7 pm in Jazz at Lincoln Center's spectacular Appel Room, Michael Feinstein shares his taste, knowledge, and infectious enthusiasm with concerts of diverse music and vocals. This year's concert schedule with The Tedd Firth Big Band and special guests includes The Great Jazz Standards, A Right To Sing the Blues, and Sing Me a Swing Song. In a recent interview with BroadwayWorld.com, Feinstein says he thinks the shows are popular not only because they reflect imagination and variety, but also because “they're so clearly spontaneous at a time when music is often pre-canned.” Each evening different vocalists join our host presenting his or her singular style.
Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates International Jazz Appreciation Month with a diverse line-up of artists throughout Frederick P. Rose Hall, the "House of Swing." The exciting offerings in April include an homage to Broadway composers with jazz-oriented roots, sets celebrating International Jazz Day and Duke Ellington's birthday, and an historic showcase of Sy Oliver arrangements performed only once in its entirety in nearly 30 years.

“If they wrote'm like that today,” Catherine Russell sighs after a particularly saucy number during her show last night at Birdland, “I wouldn't have to go back 90 years.” A Russell show is like actually being there then--primarily from the early 1900s through the 1940s. Which is not to say the artist sacrifices her own, original phrasing for imitation, but rather that feelings evoked by stylish arrangements and spot-on attitude transport us. She offers her audiences vivid authenticity, musical backbone.
What do you give to the person with everything? The Jerry Orbach Theater (1627 Broadway), home to the longest running musical in the world, THE FANTASTICKS, believes the best present might be the magic of theater as they announces a first of its kind "SEAT OWNERSHIP AT THE FANTASTICKS" program. Much like the subscription style table sharing system that is employed at the world famous NYC restaurant RAO's where loyal customers have their own tables, fans of the show will be able to choose their seat of choice for any 12 performances throughout one year's time, specially designated with a plaque on that seat. Subscribers will be able to transfer tickets to friends or family or co-workers, should they choose. The subscription fee is $500.

All the verses and their titles are constructed solely of jazz tunes with two exceptions. The title exception is 'Jazz Haiku.' The content exception is 'Vibraphonissimo,' a chronological block of vibraphone players whose music I've come to know, resting upon the two pioneers of the instrument. Commas separate titles within the verses, but interior commas from song titles have been removed to prevent confusion.
