The call of the wild is an indoor soccer team made up of eleventh grade girls in THE WOLVES, now showing at the Unicorn Theatre in Kansas City. Directed by Heidi Van, THE WOLVES is a glimpse into the minds and lives of a diverse group of girls from varied ethnic and social backgrounds.

Known for high-quality productions and successful collaborations with Kansas City and nationwide theatre companies and ranked by Hollywood Reporter as having the #17 best graduate acting program in the English-speaking world as well as being selected one of the top ten Costume Design and Technology programs in the country, UMKC Theatre announces its 2018-19 season.

Unicorn Theatre bills itself as a venue for "Bold New Plays."  Its current production, 2014s "Hir" (pronounced "Here") by the playwright Taylor Mac certainly fits in with that expressed goal.  Hir" bills itself as a dark family comedy performed as absurd reality.  It is funny in places and tragic in others.  It blows up traditional values in favor of being on the leading edge of change. 

Chaos reigns supreme in this hilarious reinvention of the classic American family drama. When Isaac returns home from Afghanistan to help take care of his ailing father, he discovers a household in revolt. His mother, Paige, has been liberated from an oppressive marriage, and with the help of her newly "out" transgender teen is passionately dismantling the patriarchy. But in Taylor Mac's shocking and subversive comedy, even the most radical changes can't always free you from the past.

Kicking off the Unicorn Theatre's 44th season is 'Men on Boats' by Jaclyn Bauhaus (in cooperation with the UMKC advanced MFA program). 'Men on Boats' is an interesting and mostly accurate exploration of John Wesley Powell's 1869 exploration of the Colorado River north of and into the Grand Canyon.

Will Eno's 'The Realistic Joneses' at KCAT plots two couples, who are new neighbors in a small mountain town, as they navigate married life through not always ideal situations. This tightly balanced ensemble cast crafts a show that traverses a minefield of typical relationship troubles keeping it fun the whole way through.

Lasso of Truth, a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, opened on Saturday night January 31 at the Unicorn Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri. Johnny Wolfe directs this multimedia experience, which looks at the life of William Moulton Marston, the inventor of the lie detector and creator of the comic book hero Wonder Woman. The use of video and comic book style slides add additional humor to an already amusing and sensual production. Lasso of Truth is a co-production with the University of Missouri at Kansas City Theatre.

The Unicorn Theatre presents a Rolling World Premiere of Lasso of Truth at the theater located in Kansas City, Missouri. Grounded, a play by award winning playwright George Brant opened on Saturday night January 25 at the Unicorn Theatre in Kansas City. The Guardian and London Evening Standard named Grounded one of the Top 10 London Plays of 2013. Elephant's Graveyard, Three Voyages of the Lobotomobile, Defiant, and The Lonesome Hoboes are among his many other plays.

TIME STANDS STILL, 2010 Tony Award Nominee for Best Play, is set to play at the Unicorn Theatre this season.

Charlotte Street Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of two Kansas City based generative performing artists to receive unrestricted cash Awards of $6,500 each in 2010. Selected through a competitive, two-phased process by a panel of area performing arts professionals, the recipients are composer/musician Brad Cox and cross-disciplinary director/writer/performer Stephanie Roberts.
