National YoungArts Foundation Announces 2014 Winners in Literary, Performing, Visual and Design Arts

The National YoungArts Foundation today announced its 2014 YoungArts Winners. Out of approximately 11,000 applications, 687 young artists from 46 states have been recognized for their outstanding work and accomplishments in one of ten disciplines across the literary, performing, visual and design arts fields. Purvis Young was considered the most important self taught contemporary artist to have emerged in the last 40 years. When he died in 2010, Bruce Weber wrote in his New York Times obituary that Purvis Young's work "… could be found in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the High Museum in Atlanta, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum." In fact, his art is part of the global collections of 60 museums.

Guild Hall, the visual and performing arts center on eastern Long Island, recently honored the recipients of the 28th Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Awards: John Alexander for Visual Arts; Walter Isaacson for Literary Arts; Nathan Lane for Performing Arts and Mickey Straus, who received the Special Award for Leadership and Philanthropy. Marshall Brickman was the Master of Ceremonies with special guest presenters: Ken Auletta, Alec Baldwin, Jack O'Brien and Lorne Michaels. Dior Homme celebrated the opening of its new Design District store on Wednesday night with a cocktail party at the Design District boutique. This was followed by the premiere of the Dior Homme-commissioned Bruce Weber film "Can I Make Music Fly?", which will play on the shop's walls.
