BWW Reviews: Trinity Rep's VERONICA MEADOWS Turns Into a Confounding, Disappointing Mystery

On some occasions, perhaps many, a great idea or concept almost effortlessly becomes a great play, movie, television show, etc. It's just the right combination of elements, brought together in exactly the right way, creating a perfect storm kind of event. On the other hand, there are many times when a great concept, a great idea, does not translate into a great finished product. Such is the case with Trinity Repertory Company's production of the brand new play Veronica Meadows, written by Trinity company member Stephen Thorne

Trinity Rep to Premiere VERONICA MEADOWS, 4/3-5/4

Trinity Rep continues its commitment to new plays with the world premiere of Veronica Meadows by Stephen Thorne, directed by Michael Perlman in Trinity Rep's intimate Dowling Theater from April 3 to May 4, 2014. Girl detective Veronica Meadows has been solving small town crimes for as long as anyone can remember. Time and time again, they stop the evil-doers in their tracks and heroically save the day. That is, until the day our plucky girl detective stops following the rules of the game and takes a dangerous turn into the unknown. This world premiere is a darkly comic gem from Stephen Thorne, resident actor and playwright of The Completely Fictional- Utterly True - Final Strange Tale of Edgar Allan Poe. This production of Veronica Meadows is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Alan and Marie Weiss. Tickets are on sale now at www.trinityrep.com, by calling (401) 351-4242, or at the theater's box office at 201 Washington St., Downtown Providence.

BWW Reviews: Durang's VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE Reboots Chekhov at Trinity Rep

These days, it is said more and more often that there are no new ideas under the sun. These accusations of a lack of originality are especially directed at Hollywood and the television studios. Every weekend sees the opening of a new sequel or reboot or re-imagining. While there are, in reality, some great original ideas coming out of Hollywood and television, there is also no shortage of originality in the world of live theater. Unfortunately, Christopher Durang's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, playing at Trinity Rep, feels like little more than a needless attempt to update and reboot Chekov while using as many modern day and mostly unnecessary pop-culture references as possible.

Trinity Rep continues their 50th anniversary season with the New England premiere of Christopher Durang's smash-hit comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Directed by The Richard L. Bready Artistic Director Curt Columbus, the show beings in previews November 21st in the intimate Dowling Theater and runs through December 22nd. Taking takes his cue from some of Anton Chekhov's most recognizable characters, Durang wickedly adds more than a dash of pop culture, a huge helping of dark humor and then lets the characters stew in a pressure cooker of their own devising. The result is a whirlwind weekend of classic Durang barbs, over the top tirades and ridiculously hysterical situations hailed. Tickets on sale now through the box office at 201 Washington St., by phone at (401) 351-4242 and online at www.trinityrep.com.
