Luray Releases Single 'Unwritten'
by Kaitlin Milligan
- Jun 19, 2019
Luray is thrilled to share “Unwritten”, the latest single from her forthcoming album Dig, the new album from Richmond, VA by way of Wisconsin musician Luray, aka Shannon Carey. Due out July 26th on 6131 Records, Dig was produced by her brother S. Carey and recorded with engineer Brian Joseph, whose own credits include Sufjan Stevens' Carrie & Lowell and Local Natives Sunlit Youth among others. On “Unwritten” Carey ruminates on coming to terms with life's uncontrollable and not always pleasant twists and turns over a lush and percussive soundscape of banjo, mbira, and layered vocals. “Unwritten” follows lead singles “Professional Photos” and “Dig”, which was featured in the New York Times Friday playlist column.
NORMALER THAN EVERYONE Comes to Edinburgh Fringe
by Sarah Hookey
- May 28, 2019
Normaler Than Everyone is essentially about an artist trying to use the many disciplines of his craft(s) to both get through and to get away from his darkest hour. Through his songs, writings and photographs, Joseph presents a funny and moving portrait of a cancer caregiver, enraged by soup and terrified by the specter of ghosts. Co-devised and directed by Dani Bedau, NTE is ultimately a meditation on love and mortality.

6131 Records is excited to announce the July 26th release of Dig, the new album from Richmond, VA by way of Wisconsin musician Luray, aka Shannon Carey. Dig was produced by her brother S. Carey and recorded with engineer Brian Joseph, whose own credits include Sufjan Stevens' Carrie & Lowell and Local Natives Sunlit Youth among others. Today, Luray shares the new singles “Professional Photos” and “Dig”. Both songs touch upon the album's genesis, born of the intense emotions that come with the end of a marriage. “I think there's a bit of truth in a photo and a bit of a lie,” Carey shares of “Professional Photos”. “I wrote this song about the image of happiness versus the real thing, and how it's sometimes myself I'm trying to convince.”

When award-winning singer-songwriter and photographer Brian Joseph got the news that his wife had a rare and serious kind of cancer, he was stricken with the paralyzing fear that any husband and father would feel. But as an artist, his reaction was anything but normal. Normaler Than Everyone unearths both the pain and the humor of what seems ubiquitous - a loved one going through cancer. Normaler Than Everyone opens June 7 at The Broadwater Second Stage, 6320 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90038.

Atwood Magazine Premieres Clara Baker's MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
by Tori Hartshorn
- Feb 6, 2019
Seasons change, we rise and we fall, and our goal is to learn to appreciate these fleeting moments. These thoughts spun through the mind of Portland songwriter Clara Baker as she was recording her new album, Things to Burn. Produced by avant-folk experimentalist Shane Leonard (Kalispell, Field Report), the album was recorded in Shane's mother's house in the tiny village of Merton, Wisconsin. Joined by two stellar roots musicians, Courtney Hartman (Della Mae) and Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray Lamontagne), Baker recorded the album live to tape, no isolation booths, no cutting in-and-out of vocal takes, no headphones, pushing herself and the players to experience the music in the moment. Fellow Portland songwriters Jeffrey Martin andAnna Tivel stopped in while on tour through Wisconsin and added harmonies and fiddle to a song; there was a relaxed feeling to the days, and an emphasis on collaboration amongst the players. Recording engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens) trucked over his studio in a U-Haul, and they all set up in the living room, taking the chance that a live performance without the cushion of a recording studio would lead to the best possible performances. “There's an authenticity to a live performance that I wanted to recreate with this recording,” Baker says. “The experience of recording that way changes the way the music sounds. We set up this experience intentionally to have us be really focused on being in the moment. It was an emotional experience.”

BWW Reviews: SCLA's Jazz-Age ROMEO AND JULIET is an Electric Affair
by Ellen Dostal
- Jul 14, 2014
It is a chilling conclusion when Kimberly Scott repeats the text of the prologue again at the end of ROMEO AND JULIET while standing over the dead bodies of the lovers. You can hear the bitter warning in her voice as she slowly looks from one end of the stage to the other at two fathers who have paid the price of their feud in blood. As her weighty words hang in the air, the lights dim and Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles's magnificent production fades out.
